We break down the <a href=\"\/tag\/inez-vinoodh\">Inez &amp; Vinoodh<\/a>-directed <a href=\"\/tag\/music-video\">music video<\/a> for you.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pco91kroVgQ\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The music video for Applause, the first single from <a href=\"\/tag\/lady-gaga\">Lady Gaga<\/a>&#8216;s Artpop album, has dropped today after the track was leaked last week. As per Gaga, it&#8217;s a bewildering array of seemingly random looks and characters &#8211; but eagle-eyed fans will realise that each look has already debuted in the new issue of V magazine shot by <a href=\"\/tag\/inez-vinoodh\">Inez &amp; Vinoodh<\/a>, who also directed the video. This being Gaga, however, nothing is ever as it seems, so we&#8217;ve taken the liberty of breaking down every single Gaga look in Applause.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-22351\" alt=\"Lady Gaga as Courtney Love in Applause\" src=\"\/\/media.wonderlandmagazine.com\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Gaga-as-Courtney-Love-e1376925190589.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>1. The &#8216;Courtney Love in a Hedi Slimane editorial&#8217; look<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A nod to her roots as brown-haired proto-Gaga, n\u00e9e <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NM51qOpwcIM\">Stefani Germanotta<\/a>? Before the spirit of Gaga possessed her, we can imagine Germanotta sitting in her pants at home, agonizing over her &#8220;creative direction&#8221; in a small Manhattan walk-up rental and praying to <a href=\"\/tag\/courtney-love\">Courtney Love<\/a>, patron saint of unwashed hair and late-night, booze-fuelled creative sessions. This is Gaga doing the kind of dishevelled grunge chic as seen in the new <a href=\"\/tag\/saint-laurent\">Saint Laurent<\/a> campaigns.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-22354\" alt=\"Lady Gaga in Grey Gardens Applause Music Video\" src=\"\/\/media.wonderlandmagazine.com\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Gaga-as-Little-Edie-e1376925551210.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>2. The &#8216;Little Edie from Grey Gardens&#8217; look<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Everyone in fashion loves Grey Gardens, not just for the fabulous turbans, but also for communicating the very real fear that we&#8217;ll inevitably die alone in our lavish mansion, surrounded by beautiful clothes and being eaten by our Swarovski-studded collared cats. The all black ensemble is very &#8216;drama school breathing exercise&#8217;, but the parachute coat keeps it couture with a hint of Margiela.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-22347\" alt=\"Gaga as Clown\" src=\"\/\/media.wonderlandmagazine.com\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Gaga-as-Clown-e1376924687816.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>3. The &#8216;Pierrot from Commedia dell&#8217;Arte&#8217; look<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The front cover of the &#8216;Applause&#8217; single, and already the subject of very intense academic <a href=\"http:\/\/gaganalysis.com\/post\/56711297115\/poker-face-and-pierrot-lady-gagas-sad-clown\">debate<\/a>. When was the last time you saw One Direction referencing 16th century Italian theatre? That&#8217;s right: never.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-22346\" alt=\"Gaga as Ghost of Gaga Past\" src=\"\/\/media.wonderlandmagazine.com\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Gaga-as-Ghost-of-Gaga-Past-e1376924721316.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>4. The &#8216;ghost of Gaga past&#8217; look<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Next up, Gaga in a cage. The bright yellow Marilyn hair harks back to Gaga&#8217;s fluro curls in <a href=\"http:\/\/fc02.deviantart.net\/fs71\/f\/2010\/075\/b\/9\/Lady_Gaga_Telephone_by_AmongTheDistantStars.jpg\">Telephone<\/a>, but the smeared stage make-up says Ronald McDonald come by hard times. The message: Gaga&#8217;s got so many past incarnations she has to keep them in cages, so they don&#8217;t attack each other like mirror demons.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-22355\" alt=\"Lady Gaga as Tilda Swinton brony in Applause music video\" src=\"\/\/media.wonderlandmagazine.com\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Gaga-as-Tilda-Swinton-brony-e1376925594787.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>5. The &#8216;Tilda Swinton as a brony&#8217; look<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This one is <a href=\"\/tag\/alexander-mcqueen\">McQueen<\/a> androgyny with Tilda Swinton-esque amounts of hair gel, but the glittery tail is 100% My Little Pony. Also, she is emerging out of a top hat with its own Lady Gaga logo (you can see it earlier in the video). The takeaway here is that Lady Gaga is the <s>rabbit<\/s> pony in the hat <em>and<\/em> her own magician. Or something.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-22349\" alt=\"Gaga as Charlotte Rampling\" src=\"\/\/media.wonderlandmagazine.com\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Gaga-as-Charlotte-Rampling-e1376925115373.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>6. The &#8216;Night Porter&#8217; look<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A nod to Charlotte Rampling&#8217;s role in The Night Porter, where she performs a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vDG7Ytkj_a4\">Marlene Dietrich song<\/a> with her leather-clad gloves planted firmly on her breasts. It&#8217;s not the first time Gaga&#8217;s drawn inspiration from the iconic scene &#8211; the black leather gloves made their debut in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1mB0tP1I-14\">LoveGame<\/a> back in 2009.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-22356\" alt=\"Gaga as a talking swan in Applause music video\" src=\"\/\/media.wonderlandmagazine.com\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Gaga-as-swan-e1376925640111.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>7. The &#8216;Birth of Venus&#8217; look<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The hair from the now-infamous <a href=\"http:\/\/http:\/\/splash.ng\/\/media.wonderlandmagazine.com\/uploads\/2013\/07\/lady_gaga_nude_v_magazine_artpop_2013_inez_van_lamsweerde_vinoodh_matadin_18upe2c-18upe2f.jpg\"><em>V<\/em> nude shot<\/a> makes a reappearance and looks much better in motion, possibly because the dodgy hairline isn&#8217;t as visible. It&#8217;s like if <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Birth_of_Venus_%28Botticelli%29\">Boticelli&#8217;s Venus<\/a> came to live and tried to kick the shit out of a few tourists in the Uffizi. Who knows how many tubes of Superglue <a href=\"\/tag\/inez-vinoodh\">Inez &amp; Vinoodh<\/a> sacrificed to keep the seashell crotch on? It&#8217;s Orientalism filtered through a Grace Coddington lens, but seeing as it&#8217;s very pretty and not half as weird\/offensive as &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.autostraddle.com\/fuck-burqa-swag-why-lady-gaga-and-i-are-never-ever-ever-getting-back-together-188976\/\">burqa swag<\/a>&#8216;, we&#8217;ll let this one pass.<\/p>\n<p><em>Did we miss anything out?
