{"id":21752,"date":"2013-07-26T11:05:01","date_gmt":"2013-07-26T11:05:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wonderlandmagazine.com\/?p=21752"},"modified":"2013-08-12T16:37:54","modified_gmt":"2013-08-12T16:37:54","slug":"flashback-friday-jamie-campbell-bower","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wonderlandmagazine.com\/2013\/07\/26\/flashback-friday-jamie-campbell-bower\/","title":{"rendered":"Flashback Friday:  Jamie Campbell Bower"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Before <em>The Mortal Instruments<\/em> star was getting down at ComiCon, <a href=\"\/tag\/jamie-campbell-bower\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jamie Campbell Bower<\/a> talked to <em>Wonderland<\/em> about young fame, Anna Friel and <a href=\"\/tag\/twilight\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Twilight<\/em><\/a>.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-21753 aligncenter\" alt=\"jcb1\" src=\"\/\/media.wonderlandmagazine.com\/uploads\/2013\/07\/jcb1.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>This interview first appeared in Issue 20 of Wonderland, Nov\/Dec 2009.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really thought people would know I was joking,\u201d says Jamie Campbell Bower, a new addition to the <i>Twilight<\/i> film franchise who recently sparked a false nudity story about his character\u2019s family of vampires\u2019 appearance in <i>New Moon<\/i>. \u201cI was at Comicon and the guy from MTV who was interviewing me was like, \u2018So Rob [Pattinson] and Taylor [Lautner] get their shirt off in the movies \u2013 any chance of you getting your shirt off?\u2019\u201d he recounts of the moment the story started.\u00a0 \u201cAnd I though \u2018alright, I am going to roll with this\u2019 and was just like, \u2018Yeah, actually.\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 We are all naked\u2019,\u201d he laughs.\u00a0 \u201cI feel really bad because Chris Weitz, the director, had to write an apology note and I was like, \u2018Oh God! What have I done? I\u2019ve ruined everything\u2026 I\u2019m never going to work again!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately his actions did not cost him his role and he seems confident he will be back to reprise his character, Caius, for the later installments in the series.\u00a0 As a member of the Volturi \u2013 an order of Vampires that act as the law keepers to the Vampire community \u2013 Campbell Bower is joined on screen by Michael Sheen and Dakota Fanning who play Volturi leader, Aro, and mind meddling bloodsucker, Jane respectively. He describes the Vampiric family as having a sense of malice about them though he jokes they are \u201cnot villains, but educated leaders who believe in tradition &#8211; so they\u2019re more like the Royal Family\u2026 [laughs].\u00a0 Michael Sheen would definitely be Liz and Christopher Heyerdahl [who plays Marcus] would be Philip.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although many Twilight fans have been left disappointed that the naked scene was fabricated, Campbell Bower is only too keen to expand upon his own realisation of how the Volturi would make their entrance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt would be like that scene from <i>The Dreamers<\/i>,\u201d he jokes.\u00a0 \u201cMe and Michael Sheen in a bath together and Dakota walking in saying \u2018Oh! Sorry\u2026 sorry about that\u2019, [adopting an assertive voice] \u2018No, that\u2019s fine. Hop in!\u2019 \u2013 we\u2019d all be there, smoking pot [laughs].\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-21754 aligncenter\" alt=\"jcb2\" src=\"\/\/media.wonderlandmagazine.com\/uploads\/2013\/07\/jcb2.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Having discovered a thirst for performance at a young age, Campbell Bower began getting involved with school productions and the National Youth Music Theatre, and by the age of fourteen decided acting would be the career for him.\u00a0 He later met with an agent Simon Beresford who sent him to audition for Tim Burton\u2019s gothic musical <i>Sweeney Todd<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy first meeting, I met Susie Figgis, the Casting Director.\u00a0 And my second meeting \u2013 when I was actually reading \u2013 was in front of [Burton],\u201d he recalls.\u00a0 \u201cI was thinking, \u201cOh my God this is sooo bizarre \u2013 I should be in school right now.\u00a0 This is freaking me out!\u201d\u00a0 Then on the same day I had to sing for Stephen Sondheim, the musical director and then about a week later I got a phone call saying I got the part.\u00a0 So that was the beginning of the end!\u201d he laughs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[On <i>Sweeney Todd<\/i>] I was eighteen years of age, fresh-faced, wide eyed and at work with all these amazing actors.\u00a0 People were saying, \u2018Hit your mark!\u2019 and I was like, \u2018Yeah, yeah,\u2019 but inside I was going \u2018What does that mean?\u00a0 What am I meant to be doing?\u00a0 What\u2019s the mark?\u2019 \u2013 I sort of blagged my way through a lot of it but it was a really good learning experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although the acting world is something Cambell Bower clearly enjoys, he does admit he is still adjusting to the Hollywood environment \u2013 in particular, the world of <i>Twilight<\/i>.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s interesting to see how the whole <i>Twilight<\/i> world works.\u00a0 It is very strange \u2013 I still find it very, very weird.\u00a0 Just because I don\u2019t think I would have been so obsessed about something like that in my entire life \u2013 that obsession with a particular work of literature.\u00a0 [Filming <i>New Moon<\/i>] was really fun but also really scary,\u201d he confesses.\u00a0 \u201cI don\u2019t have an impact on the world and then you go in and you work with Rob and Kristin [Stewart] and Dakota and Michael \u2013 all these phenomenal actors who have made such an impact on the world and are so great at what they do.\u00a0 It\u2019s kind of like, \u2018Fuck!\u00a0 What am I doing here?\u2019\u00a0 But they\u2019re really nice and very much eased me into it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And whilst Campbell Bower has enjoyed his time working on the vampire movie, he is pretty confident he will be able to remain relatively anonymous despite the films success, unlike Twilight lead, Robert Pattinson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m still able to walk the streets of London without people pushing me into taxis,\u201d he laughs.\u00a0 \u201cThe whole thing that\u2019s going on with Rob is that he is a really great actor and he portrays his character fantastically.\u00a0 People were obsessed with the books before the film even came out and obsessed with the character of Edward and I think that\u2019s still what people are obsessing over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There is another fantasy-novel-turned-film-franchise that Campbell Bower has also recently managed to get involved with \u2013 <i>Harry Potter<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-21755 aligncenter\" alt=\"jcb3\" src=\"\/\/media.wonderlandmagazine.com\/uploads\/2013\/07\/jcb3.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a scary prospect going in to do <i>Harry Potter<\/i>.\u00a0 Terrifying.\u00a0 But it\u2019s really cool to watch how much money they put into it and how amazing they can make it.\u00a0 Leaveston Studios is now Potter Studios \u2013 I don\u2019t think another film has been done there for years.\u00a0 But all the people who are working on <i>Potter<\/i> also worked on <i>Sweeney<\/i> \u2013 which is really nice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Campbell Bower will be appearing in flashback scenes as one of the series key characters, Gellert Grindelwald \u2013 one of the few magicians to challenge the magical abilities of top wizard, Albus Dumbledor (played on screen by Michael Gambon) as well as being the only character to capture his heart.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve had scenes with a young Michael Gambon \u2013 not actually Michael Gambon, but a guy that\u2019s playing young Michael Gambon,\u201d Jamie explains of his experiences on set.\u00a0 And despite playing on screen lovers, he cannot remember his co-stars name (it\u2019s Toby Regbo).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s awful,\u201d he gasps.\u00a0 \u201cHe is my lover \u2013 but we were only on set for <i>one<\/i> day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So was Campbell Bower a fan of the novel series?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was, yeah.\u00a0 But I was <i>much<\/i> younger when the first book came out and then I kind of lost interest and became more interested in girls.\u00a0 I was like, \u2018Books are boring!\u00a0 Girls are much more fun.\u00a0 Fuck this Potter bollocks!\u00a0 I\u2019m off to go find myself a lady!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And how did that go?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBadly.\u00a0 Really badly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So with <i>Potter<\/i> and <i>Twilight<\/i> both in the pipeline, can we expect to see Jamie Campbell Bower in more franchise films?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think what\u2019s great about franchises is that you know you\u2019re in a job for the next few years and I think that security would be absolutely phenomenal but in another way I do like having no idea of what\u2019s going to happen next.\u00a0 I could be off for a job for months and then I get another one that\u2019ll take me to a completely different place and it\u2019s a completely different story and it\u2019s all very new and exciting and it gives me a lot more chance to sort of work in developing a character. \u00a0I\u2019d like to do a franchise where I could be involved from beginning to end.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Away from the world of franchising is the upcoming film, London Boulevard, where Campbell Bower is again joined by an array of high profile actors including Colin Farrell, Kiera Knightly and Anna Friel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am a big fan of Anna Friel!\u201d Jamie states somewhat protectively.\u00a0 \u201cShe\u2019s lovely.\u00a0 I think she\u2019s awesome,\u201d he declares, having become a strong admirer of the actress since watching her in a recent production of Breakfast At Tiffany\u2019s.\u00a0 Of his role in the film, he says excitedly, \u201cI get to play a character called Whiteboy who has fallen in with this drug world that he doesn\u2019t quite understand and is kind of like a posh boy being a rudeboy.\u00a0 He\u2019s got dreadlocks and gold teeth, rings and gold chains and the like\u2026\u201d\u00a0 This character description sounds so different to the actor\u2019s current appearance that suspicion of another Jamie Campbell Bower joke could only be natural.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo I am actually being deadly serious \u2013 this is true,\u201d he insists, laughing.\u00a0 \u201cThis is really true.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\"
