Our ongoing love for teenage bedroom producers and their music continues. Meet Mmoths, aka Jack Colleran.

"Mmoths"

It’s been just over 2 years since teenager Jack Colleran recorded his first demos in his bedroom in rural Ireland, uploading them to Soundcloud under the moniker Mmmoths. Since then he’s signed off his GCSEs, celebrated his 18th birthday, been flown around the world and signed to a major record label.

With support and tour slots alongside Mercury winners The xx, the Dublin producer and artist released his EP, Diaries, to international applause. Turns out poignant, ambient electro compositions are exactly what the doctor ordered for the British music scene.

Where did the moniker Mmoths come from? Are we right in thinking it’s something to do with your native slang?

Girls over here are called mots. That’s pretty much where the name came from.

When did your passion initially ignite to write and produce music? When did you realise that it was more than just a hobby?

I never really set out to write anything properly. The first tracks were just me messing around. I suppose I first thought it could be more than a hobby when labels started showing interest in what I was doing.

You were just out of school when you signed your deal. That must have been quite a highlight?

I signed the deal when I got my final year exam results. They weren’t too good so it was quite a relief to have the record deal there beside it.
