{"id":11555,"date":"2012-10-01T10:01:07","date_gmt":"2012-10-01T10:01:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wonderlandmagazine.com\/?p=11555"},"modified":"2013-08-05T09:15:58","modified_gmt":"2013-08-05T09:15:58","slug":"logan-lerman-perks-of-the-job","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wonderlandmagazine.com\/2012\/10\/01\/logan-lerman-perks-of-the-job\/","title":{"rendered":"Logan Lerman:  Perks of the Job"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ahead of the October 3 release of the much-anticipated teen epic Perks of Being A Wallflower, <em>Wonderland<\/em> talk to rising star Logan Lerman.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/\/media.wonderlandmagazine.com\/uploads\/2012\/10\/logan1.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11557\" title=\"Logan Lerman, photographed by Skype Parrott\" alt=\"\" src=\"\/\/media.wonderlandmagazine.com\/uploads\/2012\/10\/logan1-e1349083430804.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When it comes to big breaks, starring in the film adaption of a beloved coming-of-age novel, The Perks Of Being A Wallflower, is about as good as it gets. Logan Lerman, who portrays the troubled high-school freshman, Charlie, is feeling the pressure. He calls from Iceland, where he\u2019s filming the Darren Aronofsky-directed Biblical epic, Noah, alongside his Perks co-star, Emma Watson. \u201cI have no idea how much longer I\u2019ll be here. Maybe a couple more weeks; maybe a couple more days.\u201d Despite his dizzying schedule and a grumbling voice hinting at a need for some rest, Lerman\u2019s still got Charlie on his mind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy concerns weren\u2019t about pleasing the fans of the book, but more about getting to the place where Charlie is,\u201d he says, which was \u201ca little daunting\u201d. Besides slight uneasiness, Lerman sounds nothing like the achingly awkward lost teen he plays in the film: he is articulate and composed, coming across as an artist far wiser than his twenty years. For the seasoned actor whose professional career began at five, including roles alongside Russell Crowe, Jim Carrey and Mel Gibson, it all makes sense.<\/p>\n<p>But this time, it\u2019s Lerman whose name is splattered across movie posters, though he shares much screen- time with a handful of young actors who portray Charlie\u2019s fellow misfits. they include Charlie\u2019s out-of-his-league love interest, Sam, played by Harry Potter\u2019s Emma Watson, and Sam\u2019s quirky gay stepbrother, Patrick, played by We Need To Talk About Kevin\u2019s Ezra Miller. Despite the film\u2019s dark script, the cast\u2019s off-camera experience was lots of fun. \u201cWe literally took over the wing of a hotel [in Pittsburgh] and the whole hallway was filled with the actors \u2013 it was just like a dorm. Everyday we were in each other\u2019s rooms, making music, getting to know each other.\u201d In one particular bonding moment, Lerman fondly recalls them dressing as \u201cGreasers\u201d complete with gelled-back coifs whilst getting rowdy at a Pittsburgh Pirates ballgame.<\/p>\n<p>Though, in Perks, the misfits\u2019 cafeteria conversation often focuses on college applications to escape suburbia, the film also serves as a love letter to its writer\u2019s hometown. In a pivotal scene, Charlie is dazzled by Sam\u2019s rebellious ritual of standing on the back of a truck, 90s tunes blasting, while Patrick speeds through a tunnel and soars past Pittsburgh\u2019s shimmering skyline. The screenplay, as well as the novel, was written by the film\u2019s director, Pittsburgh native Stephen Chbosky and published in 1999 by MTV Books, going on to sell over a million copies. Still, there were stakes for Lerman.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPerks was taking a gamble because it was a first-time director, but Stephen is just such a passionate, intelligent, fantastic writer,\u201d he says. \u201cMy audition consisted of three scenes \u2013 one was where Charlie gets stoned for the first time, a romantic scene, and Charlie having a breakdown. It was three difficult places to get to emotionally in fifteen minutes.\u201d Difficulty aside, Lerman, as we now know, killed it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLogan was the second person I auditioned for charlie, and after his audition, I didn\u2019t need to see anybody else,\u201d says Chbosky. \u201cHe fundamentally understood Charlie, and gave Charlie all of the humour, hope, vulnerability and kindness that the character demanded.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With the buzzed-about flick set for October release, is Lerman prepared to potentially share Watson\u2019s tabloid fame? \u201cIf that were ever to happen, I think it\u2019d be pretty uninteresting. I\u2019m pretty boring.\u201d Still, Lerman\u2019s tone also suggests that this pending unknown is both exciting and nerve-wracking \u2013 so much so that he has yet to view the finished film. \u201cWatching myself having a nervous breakdown would be a little weird for me&#8230;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When I bring up the Smiths-heavy soundtrack, Lerman unveils an apt reaction from someone who\u2019s ascending toward Hollywood stardom, innocently asking \u201cIs it good?\u201d (I tell him it\u2019s great). Considering his viscerally layered performance, I have a feeling that, very soon, Lerman won\u2019t need reassurance of any kind.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/\/media.wonderlandmagazine.com\/uploads\/2012\/10\/MG_71681.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11560\" title=\"Logan Lerman, photographed by Skye Parrott\" alt=\"\" src=\"\/\/media.wonderlandmagazine.com\/uploads\/2012\/10\/MG_71681-e1349085578671.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>The Perks of Being a Wallflower comes out on October 3 in the UK.
