We just thought \u2018let\u2019s form a band and see what comes out\u2019. There\u2019s lots of other stuff in it like New York punk and things like The Velvet Underground and The Stooges.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How did you guys meet? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tom: Me, Dom and Panda met each other in school when we were about twelve. We made best friends quite quickly, then Alejandra we met when we were about 18. She came over from Spain and moved to Brighton, and quite soon after that we moved to London and we met Charlie, our drummer.<\/p>\n<p>D: We\u2019ve all known each other for at least six years, so we\u2019ve all listened to music together for at least 3 years before we started playing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And some of you were all in Joe Lean &amp; the Jing Jang Jong, which was massively <a href=\"http:\/\/www.curiousgenerationlive.com\/images\/press\/21.jpg\">hyped<\/a>, right? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>D: Me, Tom and Panda joined it when we were 18 and it took off weirdly quickly. It was the singer\u2019s band and he had his own ideas about what he wanted to do, and after not very long we realised it wasn\u2019t anything to do with what we wanted to do.<\/p>\n<p>T: Even when we were doing that band we were kind of plotting what we were going to do next.<\/p>\n<p><strong>18\u2019s a really young age to be in a band that\u2019s touted as the next big thing. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>T [laughs]: I\u2019m glad we got it out of our system! I think we learnt quite a lot about what <em>not <\/em>to do.<\/p>\n<p>D: It\u2019s not very fun to be making music that you wouldn\u2019t want to listen to. Coming at it with a couple of extra years, you\u2019re a bit more resolved on how you want it to be.<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WrLOfu8FgH8\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>It seems to happen quite a lot \u2013 a new band comes out of nowhere, blows up, and doesn\u2019t have much to show for it. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>D: It does. It\u2019s really weird when you read a music magazine from a few years ago. You forget how many band<\/p>\n<div ><a title=\"relationship books\" href=\"http:\/\/capturehislove.com\/#loveb\">http:\/\/capturehislove.com\/<\/a> Capture His Heart<\/div>\n<p>s were touted as something massive, and you have no idea what happened to them. Major labels tend to sign ten bands and they already know that they\u2019re only going to keep one on and the other nine will be thrown by the wayside. It\u2019s kind of the way that they seem to operate, like a safeguard.<\/p>\n<p><strong>That\u2019s not what you guys are going for, right? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>D: We\u2019re consciously signed to an independent and that means we can release lots of music with a lot more freedom.<\/p>\n<p>T: We just met Jeff from <a href=\"http:\/\/heavenlyrecordings.com\/\">Heavenly<\/a> and immediately we just clicked straight away. Heavenly don\u2019t try to shape us in any way, thank god, because I think that\u2019s what destroys a lot of bands. We want a bit of longevity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where does the name TOY come from?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>T: One of our friends had this old Victorian toy box which just had the writing saying \u2018TOY\u2019 on the front. It just seemed to fit our music.<\/p>\n<p>D: I like the way it\u2019s got lots of different meanings, like you can toy with someone\u2019s emotions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What was the first single you bought?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>D: The first song that I became obsessed with was \u2018Good Vibrations\u2019. I remember playing Lego to \u2018Good Vibrations\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>T: The first single I ever bought was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=TLGWQfK-6DY\">Run DMC ft. Jason Nevins<\/a>. It was the first song I actually went into town to buy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Doesn\u2019t really happen much nowadays, going into town and buying a single.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>D: It doesn\u2019t.
