They spent their early youths in the Suffolk and Norfolk countryside and came together as These Ghosts in their college todays. Nowadays, they have one album already under their belt, some brilliant reviews from the likes of NME and Clash and are set to release their sophomore album ‘Still The Waves’ on the 15th September via NX Records/Accidental.

Their university years meant that productivity was low, but it also meant they managed to explore new places and gain a wider following in the towns of their respective universities. Now graduates, the group can finally offer the follow up to their critically-acclaimed debut ‘You Are Not Lost, You Are Here’, a seriously impressive production which channels Radiohead, Sigur Ros and Modeselektor.

Here, the band provide us with an exclusive playlist themed ‘Aspinal Road’, the road they all live on together. Based on inspirational songs listened to by each member of the band, here they give us a run down of why they love each track…

CALUM:

BADBADNOTGOOD – ‘Triangle’

We came across this trio recently, who mix up jazz, hip-hop and dance to create something pretty outstanding. We had the pleasure of seeing them at Latitude Festival where they pulled out a mind-bening cover of ‘Putty Boy Strut’ by Flying Lotus.

Hello Skinny – ‘Crush’

Although this record came out a couple of years ago, it’s very much still a regular on the stereo. The layers of rhythm on this tune are just so hypnotic, I find it nye impossible to stay still whilst listening to it!

Moderat – ‘Bad Kingdom’

The second Moderat record is full of fantastically euphoric dance music and Bad Kingdom is no exception. They never over-complicate matters but do just enough to create the desired effect. Also, any song that uses (what sounds like an) elephant sample to such great effect is alright by us!

HARRY:

Ásgeir – ‘Torrent’

We’d all agree that anything Icelandic is a healthy addition to any playlist, especially when the lyrics have been extracted and translated from poetry by the artists grandfather:

Fractures – ‘Won’t Win’

A blog recently featured us alongside this track and for that we are eternally grateful! We tweeted Mark saying we couldn’t stop listening and he replied: ‘Don’t stop’. We haven’t.

Sohn – ‘Artifice’

Sohn is doing everything right it seems! Listening to Artifice reminds me of our album writing/ recording process and he layers percussion so well in this ultimate driving track.

Alt-J – ‘Hunger Of The Pine’

When the Alt-J silence broke, we returned home like excited hunters draped in fresh meat and each took it in turns to ask ‘have you heard the Alt-J return? We all had and we all love it.

NICK:

Glass Animals – ‘Gooey’

Caught these guys playing on the Alcove stage at Latitude this year really enjoyed their set, ever since I can’t stop listening to this song.

Arcade Fire – ‘Porno’

I love the whole album and  this is a stand out track for me. The synth part with the vocals changing between octaves to increase the tension within the track is so great.

Atoms for Peace – ‘Dropped’

This song has a great bass line when it comes in to replace the synth part and it constantly grabs me.

Deptford Goth – ‘Feel Real’

I like the chilled out feel to this song. I stumbled across it during a recent new music haul and instantly loved it.
