The sweltering scene

“No need for hot yoga tonight,” I overhear from the front row.  With an infernal heat trapped inside the cavernous Corinthian-lined post office in Chelsea, Prabal Gurung is the hottest show of the afternoon – literally.  Shrouded in darkness, feverish guests fan themselves with their cardstock invitations, while the only sign of what might come is a haunting violet glow from above.

Come away with me

The crowd of damp foreheads and sweat-soaked blouses is justified by the implied source of Gurung’s inspiration: an arduous trek through the mountains of his Nepalese youth.  Like a quartz stone, filled with iridescent streaks, Gurung’s Himalayas shimmer with alternating layers of extreme darkness and light.

Wuthering heights

Streaks of serrated color are ruled by rich jewel tones – turquoise, amethyst, all set against flashes of icy, opalescent white.  Yet innovation in fabric is the real power here.  Unclassifiable materials rule a high standard of textural luxury, like a wool crepe that is at once sheer, metallic, and embroidered with iridescent mountain scenes.

Even utilitarian pieces oscillate with dimension.  Light travels through a sheer back panel on an elastic-corded biker jacket, while the swirling patches on a knit sweater evoke geological layers: Gurung’s mountain climber reaches new heights of opulence.

OPRAH WEARS 3.5 POUND WIG, LOOKS FABULOUS, OBVIOUSLY

Oprah donned a giant afro wig nicknamed ‘Wild Thang’ (yes, we know) for the new hair-centric issue of O Magazine, which is dedicated to equipping women with the skills to “grow it, blo it and awesomely fro it”. As Refinery29 point out, the wig weighs about as much as a small chihuahua, albeit a small chihuahua with the most glamorously trashy name in the world. Maybe there is a small chihuahua hiding in it. Who knows? All we can say is: we love it. [R29]

Burberry Spring/Summer 2014 Menswear

WHY ARE LUXURY GOODS GETTING MORE AND MORE EXPENSIVE?

13 years ago, a Chanel 2.55 cost $4,800. Now you’d be looking at a $7,600 price tag. That’s an almost 60% increase in price, and it’s not all that unusual in the luxury market (by comparison, the average price of consumer goods has only risen 27% over the past decade). What’s behind the increase? Brands like Burberry are trying to reposition themselves as higher-end are hiking prices up, and an increasingly affluent global elite is snapping up the results. So, best start saving for that 2.55 now – you might be able to afford it when you’re 40. [BoF]

Cara Delevingne with Aaron Johnson in Anna Karenina

TOTALLY INEVITABLE CARA DELEVINGNE MOVIE RUMOURS

This was totally going to happen, and you know it: after all, Cara Delevingne‘s always maintained in interviews that the modelling gig is a stopgap between her wildly successful music and/or film career (as her Russian aristo cameo in Anna Karenina, above, proves). Now the 20-year-old’s been cast in Kids In Love, a movie about “hard-partying young Londoners”. As the Mail on Sunday somewhat pointedly notes, “some aspects of the storyline will not be a particularly big stretch for Cara.” [MoS]

PRABAL GURUNG WANTS TO HEAR IT FOR THE LADIES

It’s a common misconception that having an interest in fashion somehow demeans your intelligence – especially if you’re female (as if Miuccia Prada‘s the only woman with a PhD in fashion). But that’s not how Prabal Gurung sees it. “I wouldn’t be doing what I do today if I believed it,” he writes in a blog post entitled ‘On Women, Power and Fashion’ on his website The Journal. “With more women in power and more feminine influence in society, the world would be more empathetic and compassionate and would become a better place.” Preach! [HuffPo]

This post is brought to you by Solange, another lady with a fabulous (non-wig) afro:

New York Fashion Week is in full swing and we look at the top print trends.

Who can forget Miranda Priestly’s line in the book-cum-film The Devil Wears Prada, “Florals? For spring? Ground breaking.” Yet, New York Fashion Week in full swing and one of the trends we see are prints, everywhere. More specifically- florals, paisley and op-art. Here we round up the favourite pattern trends of New York designers.

Florals: Despite Priestly’s hesitation with this pattern, it is hard to forsee any respite from it for Spring seasons. After all, what is spring fashion without a little bit of flowers?

Paisley: Not drifting too far from the ever popular floral pattern, paisley was best utilized in colourful bursts on Thakoon’s silk vest and skirt combination, or Suno’s top trimmings.

Op Art: Popularized by artists such as Bridget Riley, op art is perpetually common in fashion patterns. Charlotte Ronson opted to utilize this print in an array of coloured lines whilst Rag and Bone’s blocky pattern gives the most monotonous dresser something to look forward to come sunshine.
