Think Pink as Foreigner’s karaoke classic, “I Want To Know What Love Is” gets a Scandi shoegaze makeover.

Cover tracks can go one of two ways. You might think it’s lazy but it’s a tricky business. Bands can reach the highest of heights, vis a vis Amy Winehouse’s “Valerie” (sorry Zutons, but you really missed a trick there) or fall into the eternal second best slot. Scandi duo Pink Milk might not have quite matched the iconic levels of Foreigner with their remake of “I Want To Know What Love Is”, but lazy they are not.

Mariah Carey had a go as well, so that’s two legends to go up against. Drummer Maria and guitarist Edward from the band are certainly brave. Their interpretation of the track is, luckily, incomparable. A languid and blurred melody soundtracks Maria’s moody moans. It’s a fluid, loose, almost drunken drawl that you can imagine playing in the background of one of those misty bar scenes in Twin Peaks.

Accompanied by VHS clips and cartoonishly ghoulish illustrations, the video does the tone justice too. “The video and its animations are made by Maria from Pink Milk,” the band explain. “Inspired by death and how hard it must be for him to find life-long love. This cover is a celebration to one of the greatest ballads of the 80s – a song that still keeps telling us love is hard.”
