& Other Stories have once again brought a new project onto the fashion scene, challenging its conventions and discussing what fashion really is.

Broadening views on gender and identity in fashion, conceptual retailer & Other Stories have called on five transgender creatives to express their views on the conventions and limitations that the industry poses. The campaign for the Capsule Collection, launched by & Other Stories, brought together a team of highly influential and open-minded individuals: models Valentijn de Hingh and Hari Nef, photographer Amos Mac, stylist Love Bailey, and make-up artist Nina Poon.

& Other Stories are known to be pioneers of diversity. Constantly finding inspiration and endless talent in various ages, ethnicities, and personalities; and this project is yet another example of how the retailer likes to challenge the traditional fashion gaze. “The fashion world is embracing transgender models and we think that’s great. But we couldn’t help to ask ourselves how the traditional fashion gaze can change if we keep the same normative crew behind the camera. So we invited five amazing creatives, all transgender, to make our latest story,” says Creative Director, Sara Hildén Bengtson.

The creatives not only shot an amazing campaign for the new collection, but also the highly influential video The Gaze & Other Stories. Director, Ninja Thyberg, finds exploring sexualities and stereotypes a vital aspect in fashion and has used her expertise to create this short clip to tell a story that will broaden the current views on gender in fashion.

The collection has as many versatile aspects as the individuals involved in it. Multi-layered fabrics parallel with the multi-layered world of fashion, and present a collection that speaks loudly about identity and contemporary perspectives.

Timely as ever, & Other Stories release a video by Lena Dunham, ‘Vote Audrey’ to celebrate the new collection created by Rachel Antonoff.

Based on the theme of campaigning for election, & Other Stories have released a video for their new collection created by Rachel Antonoff. ‘Vote Audrey’, directed by Lena Dunham stars Zoe Kazan. Audrey becomes the president in an out of body experience, despite being told no-one will vote for a woman, she brushes it off with the utterance of, “girls can do anything.” Agreed. Along the way there’s dancing and confetti, perfection!

Building on the classic Vans shapes and just giving the models a little & Other Stories revamp, this collaboration is perfect for summer days out. Blush pink and black and white print, the trainers come in leather lace-up Authentics or Slip-ons. A comfy and cute alternative to sandals – they have too many straps and you end up with half a beach’s worth of pebbles under your toes.

& Other Stories’ shoe designer, Nicole Wilson said of the collection: “We’ve interpreted Vans’ heritage sneakers in an & Other Stories way, bringing refinement and feminine edge to Vans’ street style legacy.” Gorge granny, Daphne Selfe, the oldest model in the world and Flo Dron star in the campaign.

Sadie Williams teams up with & Other Stories for a signature glitter fuelled collaborative capsule collection.

Film by Sadie & Joe Williams

If David Bowie had a love child with Mary Queen of Scotts – the girl born (in some hypothetical era) would be wearing nothing but Sadie Williams. Renowned for the rigid twinkling metallic structured gowns in her grad collection, coined ‘Disco Daleks’ by Alexander Fury, Sadie Williams is back in the spotlight and this time it’s for her collaboration with famed high-street innovator & Other Stories. Having already worked with J.W.Anderson and Katie Hillier since graduating last year, London based new-gen designer Sadie Williams is one to watch and her glitter-fuelled capsule collection for & Other Stories is testament to this. Dropping in stores this Thursday November 13th, prices start at £45. We catch up with Sadie herself to find out more…

 Sadie_004

How did your collaboration with & Other Stories come about?

Sadie: Kim Sion (a really cool lady) who consults for the brand had seen my MA Graduate collection and organised a meeting with the & Other Stories team in London. I showed them my portfolio of textile samples and fashion design, and it all happened from there really.

What are the re-occurring references behind your work?

S: I don’t have specific reoccurring references, but I am always interested in funny juxtapositions and odd combinations of influences. I combine my love of texture, pattern & colour with simple, clean shapes. Ultimately I aim to create beautiful modern and exciting work that encapsulates a tomboyish, youthful sensibility.

This is a continuation of your grad collection, do you think you will stray from this trademark aesthetic?

S: This collection actually came from my development work towards my grad collection, more than the final collection itself. I wanted to explore the spirit and aesthetic of the unrealised designs in this body of work. I won’t be keeping to the same ‘trademark’ aesthetic. I’m not entirely sure what my future work will look like, but I will always be creating textile driven fashion and working intuitively, whilst playfully referencing the things that excite me.

What would you personally wear from the collection?

S: I’m not just saying this, but all of it! I genuinely can’t wait to start wearing it!

Neither can we!

& Other Stories asked photographers Nadia Sarwar and Isabel Martínez to interpret the four fragrances in their eau de toilette range

& other stories eau de toilette

As a brand known for their creative collaborations, & Other Stories have struck a fragrant note with their latest project.

In celebration of their eau de toilette launch, photographers Nadia Sarwar and Isabel Martínez were asked to capture the four scents in a series of photos.

An essential element of the & Other Stories beauty concept is that all products are truly sensorial and personal – and you don’t get much more sensorial and personal than fragrance, do you? With this in mind, the eau de toilette range adds an olfactive dimension to the visual expressions of the brand’s fashion and beauty collections.

New York-based Brit Nadia Sarwar – full-time photographer and founder of froufrouu.com – was one of the first co-creatives to work with & Other Stories. For the eau de toilette launch, she is joined by Barcelona-based Isabel Martínez.

“& Other Stories’ eau de toilettes have a subtle scent that changes a little bit depending on the woman who wears it. They inspired me to create four feminine and enigmatic pictures which tell a story that, as the perfume itself, depends on the imagination of the viewer. I wanted to express that when wearing the fragrance, you’re wearing a piece of poetry,” says Isabel Martínez

“The scents and specific notes evoked a beautiful nostalgia which was drawn upon to reimagine familiar yet fresh moments,” says Nadia Sarwar.

Both photographers were given free range to interpret the fragrances – ‘Fig Fiction’, ‘Punk Bouquet’, ‘Botanic Whisper’ and ‘Moroccan Tea’ – in whatever way appealed to them.

You can see their interpretations for each below.

& Other Stories is launching a capsule collection with Swedish designer A-S Dåvik for AW14

As Davik other stories

Launching in London only last year, & Other Stories is one of our favourite stores on the highstreet. But, for AW14, a storm of contemporary elegance is brewing in the shape of Swedish designer A-S Dåvik. In collaboration with & Other Stories, she has created a collection of everything from ready-to-wear pieces to shoes and accessories, with each piece embedding her idiosyncratic aesthetic into the store.

“My collection shows reworked classics that offer something new. The pieces are elegant and calm, and when you look closer you discover exciting details, well-executed construction and versatility. My work is never loud, but it is never boring,” promises Dåvik.

Featuring a grand silhouette with focus on the waist, the collection is a flattering one. The graphic shapes of a coat are highlighted, while wide trousers, jackets and classic shirts are made from only the highest quality of materials. Accessories enter the frame and perfect the silhouette in the form of pieces such as a flat brim bowler hat and mannish flats.

But what about inspiration? Greta Garbo is omnipresent in Dåvik’s design, but Georgia O’Keeffe’s life and work, as well as the ideas of Jean Arp, have all played a role in this collection. Classic and sophisticated, the collection’s palette is one of grey, cream and navy. And while it’s certainly perennial, the movement and detailing is what gives the collection its contemporary touch and captures Dåvik’s signature style.

Scandi avant grade fashion pioneers & Other Stories announce a new capsule collection in collaboration with Swedish singer-songwriter, Lykke Li.

LykkeLi&OtherSotries

Born from a conversation had while Li was preparing what to wear before heading around the world to promote her critically acclaimed third album, I Never Learn, the collection will feature items mostly in black, with elements of white. Designed to include everything needed for a complete wardrobe, the pieces adopts elements of the singer’s dark and minimalist aesthetic and will include ready-to-wear, shoes, bags, jewellery and accessories.

“I’m a nomad and travelled my whole life so my style choices have grown out of pure necessity. I need to travel light but still feel empowered, there’s no space for frills or colours. I want to feel strong whether it’s falling out of a tour busy in the early morning, watching the sun rise in Paris or belting me heart out in NYC,” says Li.

“It’s been a dream of mine to have the perfect leather sac filled with the bare essentials, like a true nomad ready for business, and Stories gave me that chance. This collection is my version of that lifesaving sac and will be my uniform until the day I die.”

The visuals for the collaboration give a thrilling glimpse into what we can expect from the pieces: clean, simple, timeless lines, in the perfect shades to see you through the winter in style. The collection is available in store and online from Autumn 2014. Check out Lykke Li rocking the collection below.
