Kate McGill and Daniel Broadley – of “melancholy indie-pop” outfit Meadowlark – stop by to tell us about the successes of their EP and their forthcoming album.

Meadowlark

Having receiving airtime on XFM, Radio 1 and 6Music as well as being invited for one of those dreamy Burberry acoustic sessions we adore, Meadowlark are quickly reaching new heights. Recently returned from exhibiting their EP Dual on tour supporting James Veck-Gilodi, the Bristol duo are settling down to make an album.

Kate’s sweet chirping vocals accompanied by the pared back acoustic instrumentals as shown on Dual will hopefully make for an equally soothing debut album. Until that’s released you can catch them on the BBC Introducing stage at Glastonbury (they made a very excited Facebook post to share the news) or at their headline show at the Lexington, London in October. We pinned down the pair to talk about the recording process of their EP and their favourites on the scene at home.

How did you become a band?

Dan was coming up to Bristol to watch a Tallest Man On Earth gig and dropped by my flat beforehand to catch up! He was looking to get out of the rock scene and I was looking to collaborate more and move on from the solo thing. A few weeks after I text him asking him if he’d be up for a jam some time and the rest is now history! All happened super quickly and naturally.

How do you go about writing together?

We like to get away from our normal everyday lives and settle into a quiet area surrounded by our instruments. We love going to a studio called Middle Farm in Devon for example! No phone signal and in the middle of nowhere. Sounds cliche and a bit pretentious really, but we work so much better this way. Normally I’ll come up with some chords and a few melody ideas and we’ll just flesh it out together over a few hours.

What do you write about?

A whole host of things really – but anything that really grabs us and makes us feel something. Something we both can really connect or relate to when playing live.

What’s been your favourite moment together as a band to date?

We’ve been so lucky so far that it’s actually kinda hard to choose! I’d say it’s between selling out our first proper headline show and hearing Eyes Wide on Radio 1 for the first time. Both were pretty surreal but absolutely incredible!

How would you describe your sound?

Melancholy indie-pop. Is that a thing? It is now!

What’s a Meadowlark live show like?

We try and make our live show as interesting and as fun to watch as possible. We love the music we make and I think that comes across when watching us play! I’m personally happiest when I’m on stage and sharing our music – it feels electric for me so I hope that transpires to the people watching. And the more we grow, the more we want to experiment with our lighting and cool soundscapes. So much fun to be had.

Your EP has been out for a couple of months, how was the recording and touring process?

We produced our EP with Ant West (Oh Wonder) – and working with him was a dream. It was such an easy and collaborative process. One of the best weeks of our lives actually! We had so much fun experimenting with our songs and reinterpreting them. When it came to touring the EP, we knew it would be a step-up as we’d changed our sound quite a bit – so after investing in more gear and figuring out how it all worked, we fell in love with playing the new songs. We feel so happy with where we are playing live now! Itching to get out and do more shows.

When can we look forward to an album?

We may or may not be in the process of writing one… (we are).

Who are your favourite bands in the Bristol scene?

Big fans of Lionface and Stevie Parker!

What’s your ultimate goal?

Honestly, our goal is quite modest. We literally just want to write and share our music with those who want to listen – and if we can make a living out of it, that’s a total bonus. Also, touring the world. That’s a must.

See Meadowlark at Barn on the Farm Festival.
