MDNGHT - PRESS SHOT 2

Manchester is renown for being a creative hub for emerging and undiscovered talent, but a homegrown quartet who aren’t clinging onto wishful dreams of being hailed as the new Oasis are self-proclaimed dance band, MDNGHT.

Carefully differentiating themselves from the recent success of electro-tinged acts like Fenech Soler and Chvrches, MDNGHT take their almost 80’s funk and guitar infiltrated sound, which is inspired by “Northern England and Ibiza clubland” in a heavier, unique direction.

We quickly fell in love with lead track from their debut EP ‘Into The Night’ and caught up with a few of the boys for a quick chat.

Where did you guys meet and how was the project born?

Jordan and I (Will) became friends about 10 years ago and i’ve been friends with Anthony since childhood but it wasn’t until Anthony and Lloyd met at university a few years ago that we started working towards creating MDNGHT. We’ve all been in various bands since school but MDNGHT is the first that we’ve all taken seriously.

What is it you love about Manchester and how do you think it compares for emerging music in comparison to other UK cities?

Manchester is our home so we’re always going to feel attached to it. It’s steeped in musical history and while most Manchester bands are still clinging onto the hope that they will be the next Oasis, there are a handful of artists breaking that mould and doing something exciting.

Are there any visible differences between your gigs to that of other bands?

We perhaps like to dance a bit more than other bands, as do the audience… If we’re lucky. Our live set up is basically a mix of live band and DJ set. It’s a bit different but it works and it’s what makes us unique. You won’t get any silence between songs and you don’t have to know all the songs to enjoy it.

Are there ever any creative differences between any of you when you’re crafting a track?

I think you’re always going to get the odd disagreement here and there but if there’s ever anything that someone feels very strongly against then we’ll change it. When writing/recording we always imagine how each song will go down live which always inspires us. In terms of what inspires us musically, it can literally be anything from the last 60 years of music

Tell us a little bit about the new EP ‘Into The Night’? What does it sound like and what did you want to achieve with it’s completion?

I think each track apart from perhaps ‘I Will Lead You On’ has quite a dark feel. We just wanted to give people a taste of what we’re about really.

What other emerging talent are you championing at the moment? Any exciting musical talent that we’re yet to hear about?

We’ve known Fehrplay for a few years now since he moved to Manchester briefly. He’s recently signed to Eric Prydz’s label and is doing extremely well at the moment which is great to see, so we’re really behind him.

What would you like to have achieved by this time next year?

This time next year, we hope to be coming off the back of a string of festival dates and hopefully preparing to head stateside.
