Cool to Warm

Tailored elegance being the eternal watchwords for Giorgio Armani, even for his youthful diffusion line Emporio, it was very much business as usual for the iconic designer this time in Milan. Things began in cool, gunmetal shades of grey cut into double breasted coats with matching pleated-but-slim trousers as well as into a nice peak lapelled number tastefully adorned with isolated paisley swirls.

Coast-side Cutey

Things warmed up colour-wise as the collection moved into rusty copper tones (little asymmetrically fronted jackets) and then into feminine pinks and roses: super textured, long-cut tailored pieces were a standout while a printed pink suit with matching neck-scarf was cutesy but charming. There were no shortage of thoughtfully cut dresses with a breezy, costal sway to them either.

King of Cutting

The surest sign that this was a collection for those in warmer climes was the omnipresence of tailored Bermuda shorts in any number of iterations; sometimes placed under blazers and sometimes blurring the line between short and skirt, they came with swishing pleats but were also presented in closer more understated cuts in wonderfully tactile fabrics. There weren’t any surprises this time, then, from the man who has made beautiful and flattering clothes his bread and butter for over forty years – and perhaps that’s no bad thing.

It’s common knowledge that Emporio Armani loves a good jam session. Since 2011, the Emporio Armani Summer Garden Live series has merged the famed and fabulous of fashion with the fabulous and famous in music and celebrity. Held at the cool confines of the Emporio Armani New Bond Street store Tuesday evening, guests were first offered the usual round of delectable canapes and bountiful jugs of booze and bespoke cocktails by Ciroc vodka and Peroni.

Guests were in for a hot surprise, as the slew of musical performances took place at the store’s secret garden pavilion. Each performance had guests such as Bip Ling, Oona Chaplin and featured April/May 2013 Wonderland actress Gemma Chan dancing the night away. Performers AlunaGeorge, Jamie N Commons and Rollacoaster girl Arlissa looked as fine as they played, and all were introduced by MTV babe Laura Whitmore.

While the fun is ended, the spirit of the Garden Party lives on via the selection of party playlists, all sponsored by Emporio Armani in association with Spotify. Take a listen to AlunaGeorge’s fab-fun mix below, and then head over to Armani’s Spotify page to continue listening to the best mixes of fashion’s most magical summer night.

Parting from the overwhelming Nineties nostalgia present at some of the top London Collections: Men shows, Emporio Armani’s show for Milan Fashion Week was a celebration of the digital future.

Unlike the War-era voluptuousness of the Emporio Armani AW13 women’s collection, the SS14 menswear is far more body-conscious, accentuating Adonis-like athleticism and futuristic luxury. The collection was a mathematical lesson in babenomics, as geometric patterns, particularly the hexagon, took precedence, symbolising the increasingly complex hive of digital connectivity across the globe.

Lines and hems were purposefully absent in favour of sci-fi functionality. From the jersey grey t-shirt with a hexagonal relief to the Miami Vice monochrome suits, each garment was laser-cut and perforated for futuristic definition reminiscent of digital codes. The lightweight construction of the fabrics highlighted the layers of mesh, and most garments, from the blazers to harem trousers, were zipped or clasped tight to the body – rather than demurely buttoned – for an easy, sporty look. Fit for the future – or really, fit for right now.

Youthful experimentation can easily become an overdone cliche. But when wiser and more prominent fashion houses like Emporio Armani turn to experimentation, it’s truly a thing to celebrate. Unlike the beautiful but classically-rendered collections of the their past, Emporio Armani’s AW’13 collection, dubbed Kajal, combines the lasting trends of past eras, such as 1920’s bowler hats and deep Deco cuts, with thoroughly modern globalisation.

The silhouettes are long and simple, but the roughly hewn fabrics and playful accessories bring in the experimental edge. Soft pink trousers paired with a grey pea coat harken the androgynous style of fashionable West End gamine girls. A decadent scarlet velvet dress with emphasised, sculptural hips calls upon Moroccan autumns, while sky-blue mohair trousers are relaxed enough for a stroll through San Francisco’s bay area. This season, the Armani girl is both new and nostalgic- she might be a spur-of-the-moment jet setter, but she’s still a lover of the classics.

Milly Simmonds from Union Models brightened up our Sunday when she popped in for a chat.

How did you become a model?

I got scouted when I was 17 by a guy called Jody Furlong and signed with Union. I finished school then moved to London to model full time.

What were you doing before modelling?

I was just at school studying history, art and textiles. I loved textiles and I was really into sport. I did a bit of modelling whilst still at school as they let me have the time off but I waited until I finished my A-levels before doing it full time.

What do you like to do when you’re not modelling?

I like doing art and I’m starting to make jewellery. I also like hanging out with my friends and shopping.

What type of music do you like?

Everything except heavy metal. I like old school hip-hop and R&B, The Rolling Stones and a bit of Motown.

What’s your favourite film?

The other day I saw This Means War; it was stupid but funny and Tom Hardy is really hot! I love Dirty dancing and The Hangover.

What shows did you walk in last season?

Emporio Armani, Topshop, Moschino Cheap & Chic, Antonio Marras… I did all of them! Armani was really fun as there were 70 of us. All the shows great to do as you get a real adrenalin rush.

Where has been your favourite place you’ve travelled?

Brazil, I did a shoot in Rio when the carnival was on which was amazing. I also love going to New York.

What’s your favourite place to hang out in London?

My flat and Primrose Hill, especially when it’s sunny. I like going out for drinks around there.

Do you have a particular photographer you would like to work with?

Steven Meisel, that’s the big one and Bruce Weber.

What’s your favourite item of clothing?

A big comfy jumper, sunglasses and a pair of jeans I’ve had since I was 13, they are the most comfy jeans I’ve ever worn.

What would you like to do in the future?

In the next few years I would quite like to move to New York and continue modelling and my far off dream after modelling would be to move to Cornwall and do interior design or own my own business. Maybe have a beach bar or café. I would also like to do horse-riding again. I used to go all the time before I moved to London and I miss it.
