We hung out in the sunshine with Models 1 beauty Anja Konstantinova talking about her fear of dolphins & her dream of becoming Anja Lion

Anja

Age: 22

Hometown: Melbourne, Australia & hopefully here soon!

I was scouted: In Melbourne when I was 20 I was working at a hair salon, an agent saw me & asked me to lunch. When she realised I was only 5’4 she didn’t mind. A few months later everything went mentally busy!

Favourite childhood memory: Walking to Kindergarden with my grandma every morning.

Hobbies: Hanging out with my mates, going for walks, sitting in coffee shops & reading my books. I also like watching documentaries.

Pets: I have a dog called Lurchie. I like dressing her up in different outfits. She has t-shirts, a monster outfit & a pudding hat for Christmas time. My boyfriend isn’t happy about it but she loves it!

Favourite London hang out: East London where all my friends live.

Current Obsession: Sunshine

Fear: Spiders, the ocean & dolphins

Guilty pleasure: Eating ice cream in bed every night. I love cookies & cream.

Favourite place in the world: I don’t think I have one yet, I still have a lot of travelling & exploring to do!

Dream destination: South Africa & Iceland

Favourite food: Hot chips

Dream dinner date: Snoop Lion (aka Snoop Dogg) because he is sick. We would sit around chilling & listening to reggae. I want to be Anja Lion!

Favourite movie: Candy

Least favourite movie: Action films

Favourite cartoon: As a kid it was definitely Tom & Jerry

First gig: It was something stupid like Big Day Out (a massive festival in Melbourne) when I was 15.

I’m currently listening to: Anything & everything. I always listen to my i-pod on shuffle.

Most treasured possession: My polaroid camera, I carry it around everywhere.

Dream job: After modelling I would like to work in a job that helps people dealing with traumas. It’s funny because I had my cards read recently & they said I was a nurse in a past life working with people during the war.

Last thing I bought: Something boring like lunch

Career highlight so far: Working with Terry Richardson as it was one thing I really wanted to do. He’s really cool, chilled, interesting & funny. I love that he’s still really passionate about taking photos & his studio/ team are cool. There is Terry stuff everywhere!

Future plans: I would love to continue this adventure for a few more years, really travel & see the world then I want to be a Mamma.

Myself in three words: Free spirit, indecisive & adventurous

If I could have one wish: Learn to fly

We spent the morning flaking out – mountains and waterfalls were the topic of the day – with the lovely Douglas Neitzke from Premier Models. Here what we saw, and said…

How did you become a model?

I was scouted in my hometown in Brazil. I had to think a lot about it as it meant moving to Sao Paulo. I was only 16 so thought I would give it a try. I had never been to a big city before so I went and stayed with my Auntie for a while.

What were you doing before modelling?

I was in my last year of high school and working for my dad at his silk screen printing business.

What do you like to do when you’re not modelling?

I enjoy cycling, walking, playing music and hanging out with my friends.

What type of music do you like?

I like anything: rock, reggae, african, brazilian music…

What’s your favourite film?

Big Fish, Trainspotting and Baraka are some of my favourites. Baraka is about tribes in different parts of the world; it’s pretty amazing.

What shows did you walk in last season?

Dries Van Noten, Yves Saint Laurent, Kenzo, Cerruti, Neil Barrett…

Where has been your favourite place you’ve travelled?

Tanzania, province Kanagawa. It’s all mountains, rivers and natural waterfalls.

Do you have a particular photographer you would like to work with?

Mert and Marcus.

What’s your favourite item of clothing?

A jacket that was from my grandfather, I don’t wear it every day because it’s so special.

What’s been your favourite fashion moment so far?

Probably the first jobs I had. I did an editorial in LA in a desert, which was pretty amazing. It was a shoot and road trip all in one!

What would you like to do in the future?

Something with communications and languages. I would like a job that keeps me going between Brazil and Europe, as I enjoy travelling so much.

Wonderland had the pleasure of spending an afternoon with Jana Knauerova from Models 1, talking rock climbing, Versace and There Will Be Blood.

How did you become a model?

When I was 17, I sent a picture to an agency in Prague. They asked me to come in and do some test shoots that they sent me to London over the summer break to do castings and go-sees which all went pretty well. When you’re a new face, it’s really exciting as everyone’s keen to see and work with you.

What were you doing before modelling?

I was at school and just doing normal stuff that 17 year olds do. I played the violin, my older sister is a professional musician but even though I enjoyed playing, I knew it wasn’t the career I wanted to pursue.

What do you like to do when you’re not modelling?

I love to exercise: I run, do yoga and like indoor rock climbing.

What’s your favourite film?

Recently I saw The Artist, I wasn’t keen on seeing it because it’s a silent movie but my boyfriend is studying film so I went along and I’m glad I did. I also like the film There Will Be Blood.

What books do you enjoy reading?

Right now I’m mostly reading non-fiction. Though I got The Hunger Games for my birthday and am pretty into that.

Do you have a particular photographer you would like to work with?

Yes, there are so many! Of course, I would love to work with Mert & Marcus. I’m interested to see how they work together.

Is there a person that inspires you?

I love Woody Allen. I love his movies and the way he shows life. I really enjoy his humour.

What’s your favourite item of clothing?

I like to feel really comfortable. I love my Philip Lim evening pants, as they’re comfy and classic.

What’s been your favourite fashion moment so far?

I really enjoyed shooting with Mario Testino for American Vogue and the Versace campaign.

What would you like to do in the future?

In the near future I would definitely like to study and learn as much as possible. I would like to learn new languages. I really like modelling, so hopefully I will be able to do both. I don’t know when I will start studying yet, for now I am using my spare time to read and prepare. I don’t intend to quit modelling yet, but it’s not forever.

Milly Simmonds from Union Models brightened up our Sunday when she popped in for a chat.

How did you become a model?

I got scouted when I was 17 by a guy called Jody Furlong and signed with Union. I finished school then moved to London to model full time.

What were you doing before modelling?

I was just at school studying history, art and textiles. I loved textiles and I was really into sport. I did a bit of modelling whilst still at school as they let me have the time off but I waited until I finished my A-levels before doing it full time.

What do you like to do when you’re not modelling?

I like doing art and I’m starting to make jewellery. I also like hanging out with my friends and shopping.

What type of music do you like?

Everything except heavy metal. I like old school hip-hop and R&B, The Rolling Stones and a bit of Motown.

What’s your favourite film?

The other day I saw This Means War; it was stupid but funny and Tom Hardy is really hot! I love Dirty dancing and The Hangover.

What shows did you walk in last season?

Emporio Armani, Topshop, Moschino Cheap & Chic, Antonio Marras… I did all of them! Armani was really fun as there were 70 of us. All the shows great to do as you get a real adrenalin rush.

Where has been your favourite place you’ve travelled?

Brazil, I did a shoot in Rio when the carnival was on which was amazing. I also love going to New York.

What’s your favourite place to hang out in London?

My flat and Primrose Hill, especially when it’s sunny. I like going out for drinks around there.

Do you have a particular photographer you would like to work with?

Steven Meisel, that’s the big one and Bruce Weber.

What’s your favourite item of clothing?

A big comfy jumper, sunglasses and a pair of jeans I’ve had since I was 13, they are the most comfy jeans I’ve ever worn.

What would you like to do in the future?

In the next few years I would quite like to move to New York and continue modelling and my far off dream after modelling would be to move to Cornwall and do interior design or own my own business. Maybe have a beach bar or café. I would also like to do horse-riding again. I used to go all the time before I moved to London and I miss it.

We had the pleasure of catching up with the lovely Amanda Nimmo from Storm Models – who you can also spot in our current issue.

How and when did you become a model?

I got scouted in Ottawa – I was walking to my friend’s house. It’s funny because I said “no” at first, but when I was joking around with my friend about it, she was interested so looked it up. I saw two of my school friends were also modelling and were currently in Greece I so decided to go and meet with the agency. My first trip was to the Toronto agency where I started modelling and getting a lot of work. I was still in high school so starting in Toronto worked well as I could go back and forth.

What were you doing before modelling?

I was at high school. I started modelling during 12th grade but did it quite secretly. None of my teachers were aware until graduation. They were surprised and found it funny when I told them what I had been doing as I’m the girl always in sweat pants and never brushing my hair!

What do you like to do when you’re not modelling?

In other cities, I like to explore and check out other neighbourhoods. I take the train somewhere and do day trips, which are always sick. I also do some touristy things. If I’m at home I spend time with my family and friends and enjoy going out in my native Canada. Riding my bike in the summer and skating every winter.

Where are you based?

In my suitcase – I’m literally living out of it. I haven’t unpacked and I don’t think I will!

What’s your favourite film?

I watched FernGully recently, which made me remember how much I liked it! It’s a cartoon film about a woodland pixie. It’s weirdly hippyish and really kind of trippy. I was more enthralled than my younger cousin. It’s definitely a childhood classic and I would definitely recommend it.

What books do you enjoy reading?

I like a lot of Canadian history books. I like factual books. I hate romantic books.

What shows did you walk in last season?

I did the full schedule for New York and Paris but only Giles in London and Just Cavalli in Milan. It was nice to have a couple of days off in London, as I really like this city. It reminds me of the West Coast and Canada. Just little things about this place, it kind of fits. I like all the big cities for different reasons, the crepes in Paris and the burgers in New York. I find there is something special about wherever you are.

What’s your favourite item of clothing?

It would definitely be a comfy hoodie. I always travel with one. I also have an eagle -headed ring I got in Canada, which is special.

What has been your favourite fashion project so far?

I think one of my favourites was a job that took us to Tofino in Canada, which is one of the best surfing towns. I got to stay in a hippy, surfing place, which was beautiful. It was like a little vacation.

What would you like to do more of in the future?

I definitely want to go back to Canada and study. I want to be a general animal scientist and also study agricultural science.

Beautifully Damned: As sugarcoated naivety and candy colours trend this season – much too soon before real summer – we hone in on the trend to inject it with a sullied new spirit, full of quiet revolt. Re-visiting Sofia Coppola’s The Virgin Suicides, this month’s shoot encapsulates a whimsical, unhinged innocence – an alternative to the suffocating pastel sweetness and puffy fifties shapes pervading throughout the spring/summer collections. Captured by Martha Boxley’s cinematic lens, the youthful endearment of the images gives its starring motif – florals – a poetic new lease of life. While some designers opted for tradition, lace appliqué and couture ambition (à la Chanel and Pucci), others like Christopher Kane dived headfirst to churn out childlike stickers on transparent organza chiffon, as inspired by a girl’s musings on her bedroom wall.

Current London print queen Mary Katrantzou sought a slouchier, and ultimately cooler, silhouette with photo-glazing of decadent gardens forming a lush canvas on her sculptural, slightly tailored cuts. Those more attuned to the harder winter season [unable to detract from long, oversized silhouettes] will revel in the multiplicity the trend provides: sports-infused bulky shoes (from trainers to Doc Martens to the silvery Rochas pair seen above) provide an edge to the ethereal all-white dresses. Indeed, it’s icy white – the colour of the season – lead by Louis Vuitton, Jil Sander and Versace that balances the sugarcane saturation of girls on horses at an idyllic fairground; following Coppola’s suit, this is a more voyeuristic, yet not less any majestic, walk across this season’s fairy tale park.

While trends resurface once over every few seasons: “the new minimalism”, “fifties revival” and so on and so forth, SS12 introduced a glimmer of something unseen – under the sea creatures on the catwalk. Designers dipped their toes in iridescent, futuristic fabrics, taking this season’s pretty pastels in a more esoteric direction; encapsulated in today’s shoot. Seahorses, shells, and starfish popped up everywhere in a muted palette of white, pale lavender, mint green and an array of underwater blues injected with glistening silvers.

Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel lead the pack transforming the Grand Palais into a surreal sea world: waffle-textured organza tanks and tops layered to resemble jellyfish, turquoise fish fins on tunic dresses, and mother-of-pearl accessories completing the looks.

Elsewhere at Versace, Donatella summoned deep-sea sirens in lithe mermaid dresses – from mini to figure-hugging full lengths. Signature-Gianni studs were scattered to look like sea urchin shells, but the trend came alive when photo-transfers of pastel seasides combined with the house baroque. Of course, being the print capital, London decidedly stole the show with engineered water-waves appearing on Peter Pilotto’s sculpturist silhouettes and J.W. Anderson’s aquatic paisleys.

While the overriding femininity of the trend isn’t for everyone, there’s always Haider Ackermann’s seaside nomads – veiled in cobalt blue sheer tops, persian green tapered trousers and slip on flats. Or Alberta Ferretti’s slim-cut slip dresses that fall loosely on the body, in thin, shiny fabrics and spaghetti straps for a louche nineties feel (complete with dripping wet locks).

Whimsical yet sharp, airy yet structured, the trend’s whispers of couture-detailing escape an antique feel, with innovative fabrics that push technology to fashion’s forefront. Less sports couture – this is every day opulence.
