One of the hottest new talents for 2015, Norwegian artist Emilie Nicolas has uploaded fearsome new track ‘Fail’, the first to be launched ahead of the release her incredible debut LP in May. Lazy comparisons to Lykke Li and Robyn are already rife, so we delve into her creative mind to find out a little bit more.

Give us an insight into your journey – where did it all begin with you?

I was two years old when my mom and dad got married. A friend of my parents played saxophone and I remember that the sound made me melancholic. I think thats were it started.

Were you exposed to lots of music in your house as you were growing up?

Yes! Mostly jazz. My dad played a lot of jazz; Keith Jarrett, Stan Getz, Cesaria Evora and Barbara. I don’t have any guilty pleasures! My favorite is Joao Gilberto and Stan Getz

Was there a definitive moment for you which made you want to be a musician?

I don’t remember not thinking it. I told my mom I was going to be a “singing lady” when I was 3 years old.

If you could have written a song by another artist, which song would you have loved to have made?

Monument by Røyksopp/Robyn

Tell us more about the new track ‘Fail’? How was the track born?

A professor at the university called me lazy.

And what can we expect from the full-length record in the Spring?

I wrote many of the songs out of frustration. So to me the record feels empowering but at the same time vulnerable.

What is your favourite social media platform and why?

I’m really bad at social media but I’m working on it.

Are you quite fashion-savvy? What are you favourite designers / labels / stores, to shop at?

I wouldn’t say that. But I like working one on one with designers and make something unique for the live shows.

If we meet you again in January 2016, what would you have liked to achieve by then?

Hopefully I’ve made my second album and can’t wait to release it.

Emilie will play St Pancras Old Church on Wednesday January 28th.

Words: Shane Hawkins.
