How were you scouted?

I was scouted by Jakub at Latitude festival last summer. I signed with Elite London and Jakub the photographer of this shoot is my mother agent. He looks out for me like a big brother!

You’ve walked at LFW, where might people have seen you before?

So far I’ve also done shoots for All Saints, Hunger Magazine and Urban Outfitters.

What’s been your highlight as a model so far?

Working with passionate and interesting people is definitely the biggest highlight. Also, I have been able to travel and experience different cultures first hand, something I find fascinating.

Do you have a dream designer/photographer/brand you’d love to work with?

I love the work of Peter Lindbergh, he captures so much emotion beautifully in his work.

Did you want to be a model growing up?

I never even considered it until I was scouted! I was planning on studying anthropology at university once I finished sixth form.

Have you just finished your exams? Congrats if so! What have you done this summer?

Yes thank you. I loved sixth form but I’m so happy to have finished, I get my results very soon! So far I’ve gone on holiday with my family and then with friends. And I’ve been lucky enough to travel to Los Angeles, Miami and Buenos Aires for modelling!

You seem to have been travelling loads, where’s your favourite place in the world?

Despite travelling to so many places lately, my favourite place in the world is still London, I feel so at home there, it’s where I was born and live today.

Have you ever had any model mishaps?

I tripped on a wire at a casting once, funnily enough I didn’t get to walk for that designer!

Who’s your ultimate model pin-up?

It has to be a Karlie Kloss, I’m a huge fan of her philanthropic work, I hope to do the same in the future.

Nadia Girmata

Age: 21

Hometown: Rwanda, but I grew up in France.

I was scouted: Over a year ago in Manchester when I was coming home from college. I was studying languages which is something I would still like to do.

Hobbies: Reading, listening to music, shopping and I make sure I keep practising my languages. I speak English, Spanish, Italian, Portuguse, French and my African language. It’s good in the industry as you meet people from so many different places, so it makes it easier for me. I wanted to be a diplomat and I think I still would like to study international business.

Current obsession: My job.

Favourite childhood memory: When my sister and I first arrived in France. I was 5 1/2 years old. We couldn’t speak any French and we had never seen escalators before so we played on them a lot!

Home is: Wherever I travel to becomes it.

Favourite London hang out: I like going for treats and shopping.

Dream destination: The whole of Africa and the chance to travel to as many places as possible. I’m sure there are so many amazing things to discover.

Favourite food: That’s very hard as I love everything! Italian, African , French… I always make rice and put it with everything.

Dream dinner date: Jesus.

Guilty pleasure: I really like Saussisson which is a pork sausage from France.

Dream job: There are so many things I want to do! I would love to do a big campaign like Armani, YSL or H&M and a cosmetic campaign.

Favourite movie: Charlie & The Chocolate Factory with Johnny Depp, I love it!

Favourite cartoon: Tom & Jerry.

First gig: Was a Gospel one, it was so good. It was at Christmas time & they did all the famous gospel songs.

Music I like: Nineties music, I think it’s the best. Music is now all so similar it’s boring.

Favourite song: I have lots. I Wacu is an African band , they’re so cool. They make lots of cheesy music videos.

Couldn’t live without: My computer as I love to Skype with my sisters.

Last thing I bought: Shoes for my brother-in-law.

Career highlight: The Topshop campaign was amazing.

Future plans: Continue modelling and see how that goes.

Wonderland already had the pleasure of shooting with Elite’s Anastasija Kondratjeva for our online editorial The Life Aquatic and this week we got the chance to find out little bit more about how it all began for the Latvian beau…

When did you become a model?

I went to an agency in Latvia when I was 16 and enquired into modelling. I left my details with the agency and they started sending me to castings. My first casting was to a London agency and they took me on straight away.

What were you doing before modelling?

I was in school and was doing dancing at an after-school club. I wanted to be a dancer but was getting quite tall so people started suggesting I try and model instead.

What do you like to do when you’re not modelling?

I like walking around and exploring the cities I’m in and I’m quite sporty so enjoying going to the gym. I can’t just sit around watching TV, I need to be doing some kind of activity. I’m kind of a nature kid, especially in the spring time. It gives me energy.

What shows did you walk in last season?

I just did London last season. I walked for Matthew Williamson, Jasper Conran and Temperley.

Where has been your favourite place you’ve travelled?

I love lots of places. NYC and London are great. I also love going to more exotic places like Brazil.

Do you have a particular photographer you would like to work with?

I would love to work with Steven Klein and Paolo Roversi. I like the styles and images they create. There is something special about them.

What’s your favourite item of clothing?

I always wear my cross. I got it from my mum when I was a kid so it’s really special and I like to keep it with me.

What couldn’t you live without?

My iPod. I can’t live without music!

What’s been your favourite fashion moment so far?

Your first job is always pretty special. Mine was a show at New York fashion week for BCBG Max Azria. It was great being backstage with all the top girls. I just kept staring at everyone!

We talk shows for the likes of Burberry, Lanvin and Christopher Kane with Brazilian model Fabiana Mayer from Elite.

How did you become a model?

I was interested in modelling, but my mum didn’t want me to start travelling a lot before I finished school. So I waited until I finished then went to an agency in Brazil, did some headshots and started going to castings. I took classes in how to walk properly for the catwalk and worked in San Paulo before starting to travel.

What were you doing before modelling?

I was finishing school. I also had been doing ballet for about thirteen years. I quit because I got tired of dancing – I was doing it about nine hours each day, which was really intense and meant I had no time to study. I didn’t want to be a professional dancer; I just enjoyed it as a hobby. I miss it now and would like to take up a class if I wasn’t travelling so much.

What type of music do you like?

Classic rock and the old stuff like The Rolling Stones and Jimi Hendrix.

What shows did you walk in last season?

I skipped all the shows this season as I had modelling jobs in Brazil, but for SS12 in London I did Burberry, Acne, Christopher Kane, Jonathan Saunders, Richard Nicoll and in Paris I walked for Miu Miu, Lanvin and Celine. Sometimes it’s good to skip the shows as it gets so crazy and there is so much travelling [involved]! In January, I did Brazil Fashion Week which is even worse as they have forty shows in two weeks.

What’s your favourite city?

Tokyo, I love it! I love the city, the people and the food.

Do you have a particular photographer you would like to work with?

I would love to work with Paolo Roversi. My favourite photographer is Zee Nunes as he really knows about the industry and makes you feel really comfortable, plus he’s a really sweet guy. I’ve been lucky to work with him quite a lot.

Who or what inspires you?

The way my parents treat and respect people really inspires me.

What’s been your favourite fashion moment so far?

I think the AW11 Miu Miu show – I spent eight hours in fitting before I got there. I also met Miuccia, who was really lovely.

What would you like to do in the future?

I would like to go to uni, but I don’t know what I want to study yet. At the moment I’m travelling all the time, so it’s hard to have a routine and live a normal life. I’m looking forward to that in the future.

This week, the lovely Tommy Kristiansen from Elite took some time out from his travels to chat to Wonderland online.

How did you become a model?

I was scouted on the streets in Gothenburg. They asked me to come in to the agency the following Monday, at first I thought it was weird, but decided to give it a try and got signed that day.

What were you doing before modelling?

I was going to a musical theatre school in Gothenburg. I left to give modelling a chance.

What do you like to do when you’re not modelling?

I like to be at home with my family and friends and going out to parties. When I’m in Norway I stay at my father’s home and I also have family in Sweden. It’s hard to see them though as I’m travelling all the time.

What type of music do you like?

I like most music; dubstep, rock and hip-hop…

What shows did you walk in last season?

I didn’t do shows, as I was booked for a campaign in New York.

Where’s your favourite place in the world?

Tokyo, it’s the best. It’s amazing, everything works and everything is organised but fun.

What’s your favourite place to hang out in London?

When the weather’s nice, I enjoy hanging out in parks with my friends. I like Camden Town, it’s a really cool place to walk around.

What’s your favourite item of clothing?

I like to chill in my XXL big grey track pants.

What’s been your favourite fashion moment so far?

I enjoyed the Louis Vuitton show and campaigns are always fun. I also like doing location shoots, as it’s like going on a little trip.

What would you like to do in the future?

I would like to stay in this business a little while longer, make some money and try and get into acting or open up a kebab place back home.

In between walking shows during London Fashion Week, Bambi Northwood-Blyth from Elite sat down for a chat with Wonderland’s Fashion Assistant, Francesca Prudente.

I was discovered:

I wasn’t really, it was more like college avoidance! I joined an agency and got a job, which meant I missed orientation so I decided to give modelling a go. I was on hold for a job, then I got the Balenciaga exclusive which took me overseas and I did the fashion season. I’m now on my third season!

Before modelling I was:

Really unsure about what I was going to do. I had just finished high school and been traveling around the world with my best friend. It was either continuing to work in the burger shop beach house or go to college.

When I’m not modelling:
I love bike riding, doing yoga and buying flowers. I also like just wandering around wherever I am because it’s usually a new place.

Music I like to listen to is:
A little mix of everything. I really like Nicki Minaj- I saw her the other day. I also like soundtracks, The Virgin Suicides is one of my favourites. I love the Kanye West and Jay-Z albums. I have a soft spot for Jay-Z!

Books I enjoy reading are:
I always read Time Magazine and Vanity Fair. At the moment I’m reading a one thousand page book about India which is going to keep me entertained for the rest of the year!

Fashion Week shows I walked in last season:
In London were Topshop, Jonathan Saunders and Giles.

My model life so far:
Is pretty great. I was in the Bahamas a few weeks ago for a Resort shoot. I spent the whole week on a beach, with not much makeup on and every day I just had to wake up and pretend to sunbathe. That was really good! I thought to myself, “Seriously this isn’t bad!”

Home at the moment is:
New York. When I’m there, I like riding alone along the West Side Highway, the Highline and Chelsea Market. There is a really great Mexican restaurant that I like to go to and Hudson Street has good restaurants. New York is just good to walk around. If you walk anywhere you’ll find everything. New York is never quiet so I always feel safe.

Photographers I would like to work with:
David Sims and Mario Testino. I loved working with Terry Richardson, he’s cool. Steven Meisel is good because he is like the best, you know what I mean?! I would love to shoot for Italian Vogue, an i-D cover and for Wonderland!

My favourite items of clothing are:
I always used to wear an anklet but I now have it tattooed so I never have to take it off! I have three tattoos and I won’t be getting anymore. I don’t really like them, they just are what they are.

Designer I would like to work with:
Dolce & Gabbana- I think their clothes are pretty amazing. Also, Alaia who just makes the most expensive clothes!

A person in fashion that inspires me is:

Daria Werbowy. I think she’s pretty amazing and Abbey Lee. She is one of the hardest working girls there is.

Best fashion moments so far:
Doing Chanel in the Grand Palais with the big orchestra and Karl Lagerfeld. And just being there, doing what I’m doing and not fucking working in a burger shop. Out of trouble and going somewhere.

In five years time I would like to be:
Ruling at life. I haven’t worked it out yet, maybe write or do something else. Have a business. A long time from now I would like to go back to Australia and have some kids but to do anything, you’ve got to get out of there. It’s just different how people act and respond there.
