New Zealand songstress Brooke Fraser has been releasing music for more than a decade – her first album What To Do With Daylight got to number one in her native country and subsequently went platinum. Safe to say she’s something of a legacy act over there, having released three albums, toured with David Bowie and made a name for herself performing acoustic, somewhat safe songs. However while Fraser’s fame has matched those dizzy heights over here in the UK, her new single “Psychosocial” looks set to change that.

Produced by David Kosten (Bat For Lashes, Everything Everything) and recorded in London, the track forgoes subtlety for heavy, throbbing beats and orchestral arrangements – the song adopts something of a kitchen sink approach: there are choirs, a marimba interlude and a decent amount of vocal distortion, for good measure.

In honour of her startlingly fabulous new direction Fraser made us a playlist of her favourite songs: a collection as eclectic as the singer herself.

I remain convinced that Susanne Sundfor is one of the overlooked geniuses of our time and I am constantly shocked at how few people are aware of her.

I think this fellow from Leicester is really talented. He did a kooky and incredible remix of my track ‘Psychosocial’ and his wider catalogue is well worth investigation.

Billie Holiday – I’ll Be Seeing You
A vocal should tell the story as much as the lyrics do… hear this done by a master (or mistress, as it were).

Nat King Cole- Sweet Lorraine
Growing up my parent’s record player was broken and we only had a few CDs. “Nat King Cole’s Greatest Hits” was one of the handful, and as a 10 year old I wore it out, entranced by his tone and execution even then.
