THE FUTURE OF SHOPPING: TIKTOK AND WGSN ON THE RETAIL TRENDS DEFINING 2025

Once known for lip-syncing videos, viral dance crazes, and Charli D’Amelio (cue that Megan Thee Stallion sound), TikTok has transformed into a retail powerhouse. Now, in partnership with trend forecasting authority WGSN, the platform is unveiling the biggest commerce trends poised to shape the digital shopping landscape in the months ahead.

The Future of Shopping: TikTok and WGSN on the Retail Trends Defining 2025

Seamless, spontaneous, and frictionless—shopping on TikTok is as instantaneous as the content itself. One moment, you’re watching a creator test a beauty product; the next, you’re tapping “buy.” Days later (or sooner), it lands at your door—all without ever leaving the app. Since its launch, TikTok Shop has redefined real-time retail, with livestream shopping emerging as a dominant force in digital commerce. According to new data from TikTok and WGSN, one in four users is ready to purchase a product almost instantly after seeing it in a TikTok Live, while the number of sellers on the platform has surged by 131% in 2024 alone.

And this is just the beginning. By 2026, the report predicts TikTok Shop will account for 10–20% of global e-commerce sales. In an era where micro-trends and hyper-niche aesthetics dictate what’s next, TikTok and WGSN are charting the future of digital commerce. Here’s what’s set to define the next wave of online shopping:

Commerce as Community

The For You Page (FYP) may be TikTok’s algorithm-driven discovery hub, but WGSN has coined a new interpretation: For Your People. Shopping on TikTok is no longer a solitary experience—it’s social, interactive, and deeply personal. Transactions become shared moments, blurring the lines between entertainment and e-commerce. Picture FaceTiming a friend while trying on outfits together—except instead of a private call, it’s a global, trend-fuelled conversation.

The Power of Livestream Shopping

TikTok Live has redefined the shopping experience, bridging the gap between content and commerce with real-time engagement. Instead of a polished, scripted advertisement, consumers encounter relatable creators who share their interests and experiences, fostering a deeper sense of trust and authenticity. The approach is clearly resonating—WGSN reports that 47% of Gen Z consumers in the UK and US have made a purchase via TikTok Live in 2024 alone.

And if you think only trinkets and impulse buys make the cut, think again—luxury is paying attention, too. UK-based resale platform Luxe Collective made history by selling a Hermès Birkin through a TikTok Shop livestream—and you didn’t even have to wait for a sales assistant to wake up on the right side of the bed for that.

Authenticity Drives Engagement

In a marketplace where traditional advertising struggles to connect, authenticity has become the ultimate currency. According to WGSN, Gen Z is 3.5 times more likely to attribute the start of a trend to a content creator rather than a brand. For businesses, this means success lies not in polished campaigns but in fostering genuine connections. By prioritising relatability, trust, and transparency, creators cultivate highly engaged audiences—leading to a 2.4x increase in consumer interaction.

The Rise of the Kidult Consumer

Nostalgia and escapism are proving to be powerful purchase drivers. The rise of the kidult trend—where childhood-inspired products resonate with adult consumers—has given way to a new era of playful branding. Loewe’s viral “real or cake?” videos tap into this sense of wonder, while Duolingo has transformed its owl mascot into a TikTok phenomenon. Then there’s Jellycat—the plush toy brand that has skyrocketed to cult status as TikTok’s unofficial “emotional support plushie,” prompting pop-up shops worldwide.

The Discovery-Retail Revolution

TikTok is more than just a social media platform—it’s an incubator for the next generation of e-commerce. With short-form videos driving discovery, engaged creators fueling demand, and an audience eager to shop in real time, we’re only beginning to see the full extent of its retail influence. The future of shopping isn’t just happening on TikTok—it’s being shaped by it. Discover more from the WGSN report here.
