Dragons, dethronings and deathly duels: it’s all in a day’s work for House of the Dragon’s newest cast member, Freddie Fox. Well, almost. “I’m looking forward to seeing the dragons come to life. When we shot the scenes for real we were looking at tennis balls on sticks,” he lets on.
Not quite the dramatic scenes we’d pictured for the latest member of the House of Hightower (Freddie will be bursting onto screens as Ser Gwayne Hightower, the brother of Olivia Cooke’s Alicent Hightower, in the next series of HBO’s smash-hit fantasy franchise). Nevertheless, he’s been hard at work on the spin-off of legendary fantasy series Game of Thrones. As chance would have it, Freddie was largely unacquainted with the Games of Thrones universe prior to landing his role as Ser Gwayne. “I’d actually only seen a few episodes of series one when it came out originally, so honestly, I was a real newbie to the Thrones universe. I did, of course, watch the first series of House of the Dragon before I started work on series two, which I loved. The writing, the acting, the production values – they’re all so impressive. I think having a neutral eye on the show and not feeling the pressure of being an actor and fan at the same time was helpful, so that I could get into character without too many preconceptions. I’m so lucky to be able to inhabit this world building in a way that feels new and exciting for me.”
