On the 8th of March, all over the globe, we celebrate International Women’s Day — and what better way to do so than showcasing and supporting women in music? And the girls from RLY agree.

A London-based group of five women in their early twenties, they’re set to make a powerful statement with their latest single, “Ring The Alarm”. The song resonates with the anxieties faced by young women in the UK, capturing the real-time challenges of their generation. Addressing issues such as safety concerns in post-lockdown environments and reflecting on the harsh realities of shared experiences, RLY’s bold and inspiring track brings a unique perspective to the forefront.

Speaking on the release, RLY explains, “We are five women coming to terms with our generation and what that means. We are a group of friends in our early twenties who have chosen to be artists and write lyrics that tell our lived experiences. Individually we have different stories and different issues, but come together to process them with RLY. We are all just women figuring out this real-life stuff.”

To me this song is just art, from the lyrics to the melodies. And the empowering message of just being “a very fucking brave strong woman.” Feels like a song that is written like painful poetry but in the most hopeful empowering manner.

“Help Me Make It Through The Night” – Gladys Knight & The Pips
I used to play this song in the car with my mum, and there’s something about it that makes me feel so safe and comfortable. I listen to it before I sleep, or when I need some hope – or to inspire me throughout my day.

“On My Mama” – Victoria Monét
I love this song because Victoria Monét has worked so hard to earn her place in the industry and it just shows that you should never give up no matter how long it will take you to get there. Don’t rush to the finish line. She paved a way for black female artists.

“Rose In Harlem” – Teyana Taylor
This song is a good song to listen to when going through hard obstacles in life! It teaches you to see the pulchritudinous aspect of life that reflects off tough conditions that you are in.

“IT GIRL” – Aliyah’s Interlude
I love this song because every time I listen to it I feel empowered and confident, the song makes me really think I’m THAT GIRL.

“Players” – Coi Leray
This is such a sick song because I feel like female rap has been redefined so much. This song is about how girls can be players too. It’s basically just about how girls can match the guys energy.

“Mother Nature” — Femme It Forward
I love how Tayla Parx took inspiration from ‘It’s a man’s man’s man’s world’ James Brown and brought the song into our contemporary world.

“That’s The Kind Of Woman I’d Leave Me For” – Julia Michaels
This song is so touching because it balances being introspective yet so relatable to whoever’s listening. It talks about things we so often feel as women growing up and makes us feel connected. I’ve always been inspired by Julia Michaels and this song specifically will always hold a special place in my heart.

“I Don’t Wanna Know” – Willow Kayne
I absolutely LOVE Willow’s records. Her lyrics are just so wacky yet make so much sense and it reminds me of a ‘today’s version’ of Lily Allen and I am so here for it. I have massive respect for Willow as she is evidently in control of her whole project musically, creatively etc. I love the way for this song in particular, she’s used modern day slang in the writing and the production is so fitting and on point.

“downtime” – Tyler Lewis
This is her debut single and I honestly think it is such a perfect record to come out into the world with. It has such a simple yet strong concept, just needing a bit of space without it having to be turned into a big issue, which is so relatable. Her vocals have always been ON POINT and she really showcases that throughout this track. Even when she isn’t hitting huge notes and incredible runs, her gorgeous tone is shining and never goes unnoticed.
