MURA MASA & FRIENDS ARE ON REPEAT

Ahead of his trio of shows across the north of England for the ‘LOCAL’ initiative, Mura Masa and friends round up the tracks they’ve had On Repeat.

Nightlife is dead, right? Feels like a trendy thing to say. Just don’t tell Mura Masa. The British producer and DJ has become a towering figure in contemporary music across the past decade, sharing a series of eclectic, scintillating bodies of work and collaborating with industry heavyweights from Pa Salieu to Ellie Roswell of Wolf Alice, Clairo to Lil Uzi Vert, Charli xcx to A$AP Rocky.

Broadening his horizon beyond the decks and the studio, the Grammy-winner is spearheading an initiative, in collaboration with Relentless, entitled ‘LOCAL’. The project is a celebration of the intricate web of music cultures that make up the UK industry’s ever evolving tapestry. But it’s also a reminder that without the support of said industry, the individuals that inhabit it, and you (yes, you), there’s a danger of it falling to its knees. Clubs, venues, youth clubs and community centre are at risk — we all need to play our part.

As part of the incentive’s program, Mura Masa will be travelling to three ofter overlooked Northern towns and cities (Bradford, Stockton-on-Tees & Blackpool), working alongside curators from the respective local scenes — Mia Lily, Boo & ZMARAKS — to put together a line up of rising talents. Mura himself will be blessing each show with a set of his own, a sign of his commitment to a cause that hits close to home. A digital zine with ensue the trio of shows, documenting the scenes, artists and venues. It’s a raw and vivid exploration of a movement that has lost its vibrance thanks to the era of clickbait and image-centricity; it’s a call to arms for those who still care about grassroots music.

Textural and dubby techno out of Bristol and Ireland. 3AM and loving it.

Textural noise from Scotland. For lovers of Apex Twin and Arca.

LLOYDFEARS – “I miss U a lottt”

This track been carrying me lately, especially when I’m floating between home and transient cityscapes, kinda lost and grounded in survival & the face paced nature of growing up while having the ones I love orbit through these fleeting phone calls amidst the chaos. Also Lloyd is my local boyo who had me crossing postcodes I wouldn’t dare walk through as a youngen. Proper proud and gassed to have him on this lineup & to rep the complicated depth of the Bradfordian spirit. Sick tune. Sick guy.

GLOR1A & Okzharp – “Time”

GLOR1A is another artist whose vocals just caress & confront something really deep inside me, almost like a timeless longing. I think I felt this weird sense of feeling trapped in the world and listening to GLOR1A’s music really made me feel sanity within the insanity. Such a beautiful and poignant discography. Was the best surprise realising they’re from Bradford and the accent ain’t lost.

Stunt – “Raindrops (Niche remix)”

Man this tune yeah…ETERNAL PLAYBACK. Literally was put on by my parents on a burnt CD of all their oldskool fav rave tunes racing against the moon and disrespecting red lights. True BFD anthem. You can’t walk the streets of Bradford without hearing someone blast a Niche bassline remix, it’s literally the air we breathe.

TIME94 – “YT”

I rinse this tune too much like come on neo-grime Cassie remix…r u dumb. Badboi track.

Ivy Lab – “Balaclava”

I love surprising people with my sets, taking them on a mad journey & yeah this track never loses. Drop just has you ascending…Big fan of Ivy Lab. Also big fan of sonically astral projecting. Funny cos I just checked the tag on the track and it is listed as infinite falling ground …and yeah very much that.

Boo Is On Repeat…

Tracey – “Sex Life”

I bit my lip so hard when i first heard it, I drew blood. It has the energy of old school DJ Slugo n Deeon but in a very 2025 way. There’s this unapologetic female vocal thats kind of naughty. It’s sexy n’ extremely upfront. I’m gonna be playing it all summer. Meow.

Lauren Duffus – “Super”

I heard the demo version of this last summer and spent hours walking around London listening to it. I felt completely alien in the city and would walk for miles trying to feel better—this song comforted feelings of being lost n isolated. One of the lyrics is like ‘anything you want i’ll be … times 3’ – 3 is my lucky number so the stars were really speaking to me. It’s a beautiful collage of emotion that tumbles into chaos, i really feel Lauren’s music the way I feel Burial’s. It’s deep.

just lil – “rose on a stone”

My best friend Mia (Lily) introduced me to Lily’s music and her voice is magic. It’s like when you look at the sun and it’s hazy and there’s little particles of dust floating through the atmosphere which look like glitter. The lyrics spoke to me a lot, I was going through a similar thing and she expresses it perfectly.

Doss – “Strawberry”

I think this is one of my favourite songs in the world. It gives me a feeling that I can’t put into words. Like having a super intense moment with a stranger and then they disappear into the crowd. Transience.

Florence Sinclair – “White Horse”

Every cell in my body feels this track. It’s cinematic n subtle at the same time. The lyrics are so tender that I cry sometimes when I listen to it. The tears taste salty n’ idk what that means but I resonate with it. It sounds even better when I’m sat on the train staring out the window.
