Australian artist, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Alice Ivy has rapidly ascended to stardom, amassing over 70 million streams, topping Shazam charts, and earning a wealth of prestigious accolades. Her distinctive and multifaceted sound masterfully intertwines elements of soul, electronica, and contemporary pop, establishing her as a remarkable talent in today’s music landscape.
With her latest project, “Do What Makes You Happy”, Ivy continues to demonstrate her extraordinary knack for blending genres, crafting vibrant and captivating tracks. The 12-track album features a stellar roster of collaborators, including the effervescent Mallrat, the soulful Josh Teskey, and the dynamic BJ The Chicago Kid, resulting in a richly textured and versatile body of work. Tracks like “Broke My Heart” and “Dance” shine with exuberant melodies, irresistible charm, and soaring, emotive vocals, making “Do What Makes You Happy” a landmark release for this exceptional artist.
Reflecting on the process of recording the album, Ivy explains, “[the album] was written at a time where so many people were finally experiencing the freedom to do what gives them the most joy in life again. Everyone I worked with was so enthusiastic and grateful to be able to create in studios again, and to just simply connect with people on that level. I feel like I captured most of the collaborators on this record at their rawest, you can hear it in the vocal recordings.”
A particular highlight, “Smile”, sees Ivy teaming up with singer, songwriter, and rapper Chloe Chavis—better known by her moniker, chlothegod. The track exudes uplifting R&B vibes, seamlessly blending chlothegod’s expansive, velvety vocals with Ivy’s boundless and imaginative production. Reflecting on the single, Ivy shares, “’Smile’ was the last song to be added to the record. I was playing some shows in the States in late 2022 and I tacked some writing sessions in LA onto the end of my trip. I thought I had the record finished at that point, but I did this amazing session with Chlothegod one morning, and as soon as she rocked up to the session, I knew it was gonna be so much fun. She had so much energy, and she was vibing the instrumentals I played to her. I had the biggest smile on my face all the way through the vocal takes.”
