TOUR DIARY: FLETCHER

In an exclusive look at her Radio City Music Hall show, the popstar tells us about life on the In Search of the Antidote Tour, her favourite songs to sing live, and why playing for a new crowd feels like speed dating.

“This tour feels a bit different than all of the others,” FLETCHER tells us as we connect to discuss the In Search of the Antidote tour. “Something about this one feels like a homecoming and a celebration of all the music I’ve ever released and all the versions I’ve been, and the ways I’ve grown. It feels like an honouring of everything I created and every version of me I have been.”

Emotions are high coming off of a sold-out show at New York City’s Radio City Music Hall — the very venue where she graduated from New York University’s Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music not even a decade ago. Since then, Cari Fletcher — known exclusively by her last name — has cut two studio records, released a plethora of singles and EPs, and embarked upon a handful of tours across North America and abroad. She has made her mark on pop music, created space for other queer artists, and built a community that will travel near and far for a chance to see her live.

And it’s easy to see why. On stage, FLETCHER is a force of nature — filling the space with her piercing vocals, all-too-relatable lyrics, and contagious energy. Her music is meant to be listened in this way: full volume, surrounded by thousands of others who know every word. “I always am thinking about the live version of songs as I’m writing them and as we’re producing them,” she explains. “I’ve been on the road so much the last couple years and I know what type of moments always feel the best live, so really thinking about the show while creating is fun for me.”

Does she have a favourite to perform live? “I knew ‘Doing Better’ would be crazy live and it is. One that has caught me off guard as a favourite to perform live though is ‘Ego Talking.’”

“Sold out crowd”

“I get to fall in love with a new city every night. Every crowd has its own personality and energy and I can just feel people so deeply. It’s fun going out there not knowing what to expect. I feel like I’m doing a speed dating sesh with a couple thousand people every night. We get to feel each other for a few hours and then it’s until next time.. whenever that may be.“

The thing she misses most while on the road is, unsurprisingly, sleep. “That you don’t get much of with all the travel and changing places.”
