Hey Skyla! How did you first get into DJ’ing and who inspired you?

SKYLA TYLAA I would say my sister. Growing up everyone knew I loved music – when I was in secondary school my friends and family would always make jokes calling me ‘DJ Skyla, DJ Skyla’ and then one day my sister asked me, ‘Why don’t you try DJ’ing and really go for it?’ That really put the bug in my ear, where I was like, ‘Okay cool!’ From there I took heed and started working towards it.

Tell us a bit about your sound, and the projects and events you’re excited to be working towards at the moment.

ST I just did my debut headline show in London – it was amazing! I really had the opportunity to bring the South Africa vibes and richness of this sound that I love and respect so dearly to a home crowd in London. No matter where I go I always remember where I’m from, so as a Caribbean from London, to get to do that was so special, and just a perfect blend of all my worlds. I also have music I am working on…I can’t say too much, but it’s on the way and I’m super excited about that.

What’s been the biggest pinch me moment of your career so far?

ST Probably meeting Rihanna for the second time and getting to DJ for her. PUMA sent her a list of potential DJ’s for her Creeper launch event and she picked ME! When Rihanna calls, you show up! Shout out to my family at PUMA! It was amazing, her energy is second to none, she is so authentic and down to earth – she’s my idol. I was smiling way too hard in all our pictures together. It was insane.

What’s your biggest personal success?

ST My headline show in Nigeria. I’m not Nigerian, so to be able to be there and have so much love and support from everyone there, from party goers to artists was crazy – I would’ve never been able to imagine that kind of turn out. Another personal win for me was stepping out on faith and remaining consistent with this pursuit, going to my DJ lessons, my dance rehearsals and really perfecting my craft – big win.

What are some of the most memorable interactions you’ve had with people after your set?
ST The other day, someone gave me a goodie bag, and I’ve had people give me gifts that they’ve had customised for me – it’s surreal. It’s so humbling to think that people think dearly of me enough to do things like that!
