A HISTORY OF UK PIRATE RADIO: UKG

In our second feature with The Jazz Cafe celebrating Pirate Radio, we asked esteemed DJ Spoony to round up his favourite UKG gems.

The Jazz Cafe is taking over the London underground this month with its Pirate Radio residency, which sees the iconic venue bringing the best in DnB, jungle, UKG, grime and UK funky to the sound system with a mega event each Friday.

Last Friday the legendary DJ Spoony, who was a third of Dreem Teem and has had a decorated radio career of over two decades, span the biggest and best in UKG to a packed out crowd. To further celebrate the event, we asked Spoony to round up his favourite garage tracks from across the years…

Take in DJ Spoony’s picks below…

“I’ve been lucky so far to have a fantastic and colourful radio career, with the Dreem Teem and solo but all of it is based on not only my love for the medium but the time I spent on Pirate Radio. The importance of pirate radio should never be understated. It allows the music that doesn’t have major label and legal radio support to thrive and develop and Its safe to say that without it UK Garage may not have been the phenomenon it is. Big up London Underground 89.4, Greek FM, De ja Vu, Rinse, Delight and all the others.

Here are 10 tracks I love. Staples to my sets on 89.4fm in the 90’s. I was still playing a lot of tracks were made in the US but had our ‘bump’.  Enjoy the ride.”
