When the UK music industry is lucky enough to find an artist who is honest, both musically and in the way they conduct themselves, we should celebrate and champion them. A prime example of a singer-songwriter who hits said quota is Olivia Dean; the 25-year-old neo-soul-meets-pop gem whose Mercury Prize-nominated 2023 debut album, Messy, has been critically-lauded and publicly-adorned alike. A positive voice in an imperfect market, Dean is a superb songwriter, a wholesome persona and a relatable presence.

Over the bank holiday weekend in early May, Dean took to West London’s Eventim Apollo for a three-night celebration of her inaugural record. Attending on Thursday night, Wonderland saw the subtle power of the artist’s impact firsthand. Donning an elegant red dress to mirror her soaring vocals, Dean put on a triumphant homecoming show, her blissful sonic giving and gratuitous.

A full band set-up – from horns to backing vocals, guitars and piano – gave the set incandessant sonic depth. Dean’s centric performance was nothing short of dazzling; her vocality impeccable and emotive, and her on-stage character light-hearted, personal and playful. Making her way through her debut record, as well as sprinkling in the odd new unreleased cut, it was a well-rounded and heartfelt show that flaunted Dean’s towering star-quality. A voice set to grace our ears for years to come, we’re just glad we caught on early.
