Maisy Kay, who moved from a small English countryside town to the vibrant core of Los Angeles, has quickly established herself as a distinct voice in music. Maisy’s enigmatic sound merges retro dance rhythms with bright pop elements, accentuated by heartfelt lyrics. Having collaborated with major industry players like Timbaland and Tiësto, and joining JVKE’s “What Tour Feels Like” summer tour across the United States in 2023, Maisy is now gearing up for her upcoming EP, “Wonderlust: The Dawn” with her latest single, “Technicolor Honeymoon.” This song, featuring vivid synths, soulful vocals, and irresistibly catchy melodies, is a captivating addition to Maisy’s collection, hinting at the dynamic soundscape awaiting fans in her forthcoming EP.
Speaking about the inspiration for the track, Maisy explains, “Technicolor Honeymoon came to me after a trip that felt so vibrant and colourful, and well, like I was on honeymoon! It was one of the rare occurrences where the name prefaced everything else, I had the phrase “Technicolor Honeymoon” so strongly engraved in my brain, I just had to create a song around it.”

We sat down with Maisy to talk through the track’s inspiration, working with Steve Gomillion on the video and what we can expect from “Wonderlust: The Dust”.

Hey Maisy! How’s it going?
It’s going great! Thanks for having me.
You’ve just dropped your latest single, “Technicolor Honeymoon”, what themes and narratives are you aiming to convey with the track?
“Technicolor Honeymoon” as a title is supposed to represent a vacation that was so dreamy and colourful it felt like you were on honeymoon. I’m hoping to convey that euphoric realization of finding your person, wanting to see and do everything with them.
You’ve also just released the visuals, could you share a glimpse into the creative process behind the video?
I worked with the brilliant Steven Gomillion on the music video, and I think he really understood the romantic dreaminess I was aiming for. I made a mood-board of colours and visual references I envisioned for the video, and we went back and forth with going over ideas and concepts and shots. It was one of the easiest videos I’ve ever shot as I feel like everyone understood the vision right away.
You have your own webstore, Shop Maisy Kay, how did you get into designing your own product line?
The opportunity for me to make merch first came up when I went on tour with JVKE last summer, and that’s when I realized how much I love designing merch! I’m very involved with every item and I’m constantly sending over new ideas to my team. I wanted every piece to have a sort of whimsical fairy feel to it, and coming up with creative ways to display that is one of my favourite parts of my job!
“Wonderlust: The Dawn” is set to drop next week, can you give us a sneak peek into what fans can expect?
This EP is my love letter to, well, love. I’ve never released love songs before, and this EP is full of them. It’s a very exciting new avenue for me, and it all happened very easily. I just wrote what I felt! It’s the most authentic and vulnerable I’ve ever been, and I can’t wait for fans to hear it!
How does “Technicolor Honeymoon” fit into the project?
Technicolor Honeymoon was the moment I knew I had to make an EP. Originally, I was writing these love songs to share in a private manner, but after I wrote that song, I knew I had to play it to my team. I think that was the moment when we agreed it couldn’t be kept private and had to be shared! I made the name for the EP shortly afterwards.
You grew up in the UK before moving to Los Angeles. How have both music scenes contributed to your artistry?
I think they’ve both shown me different sides to the industry, and I don’t know that I’d be the artist I am today without them both. The music scenes are respectively fairly different, so it’s nice to sort of act like a musical sponge of sorts and soak up all these different sounds and influences.
What can fans expect from you for the rest of the year, in terms of live performances, festival appearances and collaborations?
I am so thrilled to announce that I will be going on tour again this summer, and this EP is far from the last release of the year for me. There is a lot of new music, and a lot of performances coming very soon!
