When discussing scripts, Sofia Coppola’s take on Priscilla Presley’s story in Priscilla is a great contender if you were to bet on how far one can go from a production like Euphoria. They simply sit on different sides of the cinematic spectrum. And so did Rose Glass’ highly anticipated sapphic romance turned mass murder story, Love Lies Bleeding, and the TV adaptation of the Vietnamese novel The Sympathizer. But oddly enough, all these movies and series have one thing in common: American indie production house A24.

At the 2024 Oscar ceremony, they were everywhere. On our social media feeds, at the credits of every second film production trending at the moment, and in the mouths of actors and directors when asked about future projects. The Iron Claw, the Oscar-winning Everything Everywhere All At Once, Past Lives, The Zone of Interest, and Civil War. Name a recent success, and chances are A24 is somewhat related to how it got there. Founded in 2012, the entertainment company was created by a group of three friends, David Fenkel, Daniel Katz, and John Hodges, already established veterans in the industry, who came together to start a new distribution studio in New York with one thing in mind — doing things differently.

By believing in and investing in unconventional scripts, absurd plots, and low-budget productions, A24 became the industry’s biggest zeitgeist thermometer, garnering not only what some critics describe as an isolated aesthetic to its movies but also a dedicated fanbase. They not only sell films, but also merchandise — and what feels like a whole personality to some Hackney hipsters. Here, a list of A24 upcoming productions we’re counting the days to lay our eyes over.

Set for release on July 5, Ti West’s MaXXXine, starring Mia Goth, Elizabeth Debicki, and Moses Sumney, is A24’s third offering of the X saga. Set in Hollywood’s ‘80s, the film will follow Goth’s character in her ambitious pursuit to become an adult film star — but, of course, make it murder and sinister-past-infused.

Featuring Nicole Kidman, Antonio Banderas, and The Iron Claw’s Harris Dickinson, Babygirl is an erotic thriller by writer and director Halina Reijn. The story follows the development of a successful CEO falling in love with her much younger intern — and based on Reijin’s previous work, with critically acclaimed satirical slasher Bodies Bodies Bodies, and such a starry cast, it’s easy to predict a hit. Release dates are still unannounced.

Following her critically acclaimed debut feature Past Lives, director Celine Song is reuniting with A24 for her new production, Materialists. With a cast of heavyweights — Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal, and Chris Evans — the story is a rom-com set in New York, and follows a high-end matchmaker who can’t help but get involved with a wealthy man. Today, we can finally start to picture what the production will look like, as the first images of the lead trio filming in the Big Apple have been released. And we couldn’t be more excited.

Alex Garland’s Civil War is already one of the biggest projects in A24’s portfolio. But even before its release, the production company had already announced his follow-up feature, a film he signs on as co-writer and co-director with Ray Mendoza. Details of the film’s plot are still very much kept in secrecy, but an A-list of actors have already been announced as part of the cast: May December’s Charles Melton, Joseph Quinn, Heartstopper’s Kit Connor, Finn Bennett, and Noah Centineo, to list some.

Set to release in 2025, We Live In Time is BAFTA-winning director John Crowley’s upcoming romance, starring Midsommar’s Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield. The plot details are still being kept under wraps, but shootings are taking place in London and the film has been described as “a funny, deeply moving and immersive love story.”

Directed by former Saturday Night Live cast member Kyle Mooney, A24’s Y2K is a nostalgia-infused comedy-thriller set for release in 2024. Featuring Jaeden Martell and Rachel Zegler, the story takes place on New Year’s Eve in 1999, and what initially feels like a coming-of-age story suddenly becomes an unhinged, chaotic and jump-scare filled tale on the Y2K bug.
