After months of waiting, Disney has finally released the first trailer for Mufasa, Moonlight’s director Barry Jenkins’ prequel to 2019’s production of The Lion King. The story, set to be released in December of 2024, will dive into the tale of King Mufasa, Simba’s father, who was killed by his younger brother Scar. In the latest rendition of the Disney classic, Beyoncé had fans on edge as she took on the role of a voice actor to embody Queen Nala — and now, she’s not only back in her regal seat, but she’s also bringing her daughter Blue Ivy Carter, 12, to voice Kiara, her character’s baby lion.

“A buddy of mine, Matthew Cherry, made the short film called Hair Love that Blue Ivy did the audiobook for,” Jenkins said in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly speaking of the casting. “Starting this project and just having that in the ether, I was like, ‘Is it worth a shot? Would Blue Ivy want to do it? Would Beyoncé want to act opposite her daughter? Is it too close to home?’ But once we put the question to them, they both responded with enthusiasm.” In the last year of Renaissance tours around the world, Blue Ivy made waves proving to be her mum’s best stage companion — and we cannot wait to see such wholesome synergy translated into Disney’s magical universe.
