The first trailer for Joker: Folie à Deux is here — and our impatience for its release has only grown. The sequel to 2019’s Joker, the musical psychological thriller is debuting this fall, with Joaquin Phoenix back as the titular role alongside Lady Gaga as none other than Harley Quinn. Since its announcement, we’ve been begging for more information — teased with few but thrilling images, the news that the soundtrack will include 15 covers (read our predictions!), and slight plot revelations, but not much else. Until now.

Despite concerns over the musical-ification of fan favourites (we’re still scarred from Wonka), if the new trailer tells us anything, it’s that the fresh chapter of Todd Phillips’s DC Universe will be just as dark as ever. Giving us a further glance into how the lovebirds met, we watch the Joker and Harley Quinn as they go from strangers to lovers. But though they might dance in the streets and sing on stage, it sets us up to expect anything but a happy ending. As eerie as can be, the theatrical preview is as visually cinematic as it is narratively compelling — and we’re counting down the days until the fall.
