GRAMMYS 2024: BEST MOMENTS

From long-overdue hero performances to pop legends and pointed speeches, these were the best moments of the 66th edition of the annual awards.

Last night, Hollywood came to a standstill to honour the best in music of 2023 with the 66th edition of the Grammy Awards. The standout winner of the evening? Phoebe Bridgers, who clinched three awards with her band Boygenius and another for her collaboration with SZA. Continuing her streak, Taylor Swift set yet another record, with her album Midnights becoming the fourth to win in the Album of The Year category. Meanwhile, Miley Cyrus snagged her inaugural Grammy for the year’s hit song “Flowers,” and the audience rose to their feet in applause for Joni Mitchell’s legendary performance — and Jay Z’s pointed speech. Keep scrolling for our roundup of the night’s most memorable moments…

Yes Miley, we all know this song!

Miley Cyrus is unquestionably in her best era yet, and we are so here for it. Channelling her inner Cher, our forever favourite Hannah Montana star graced the red carpet last night rocking an ultra-voluminous, hair-spray-stacked glam and sculptural Maison Margiela golden piece that had the fashion enthusiasts buzzing online. But beyond looks, what truly stole the spotlight of the night was her performance of “Flowers,” a tune now etched in the books of pop music, and her heartwarming speech upon receiving her first-ever Grammy award. “Why are you acting like you don’t know this song?” she shouted mid-performance, as the rockstar she is. We have no idea, Miley!

A shining star

Folk icon Joni Mitchell, 80, once again proved last evening that it’s never too late to make history. Performing her masterful timeless hit “Both Sides Now” from 1966, the nine-time Grammy winner moved some of the industry’s biggest celebrities to tears with her long-overdue, first-ever performance at the event. With her long, blond braided hair and seated in a plush Victorian throne, Mitchell epitomises female resilience and is a legend to many celebrated women in the room. An unforgettable moment!

Sippy Cup or Grammy Award?

The Carter Family were in attendance at the 2024 Grammy Awards where Jay-Z received the Global Impact Award from the Recording Academy. The Global Impact Award is a recognition exclusively honoured for Black musicians, created in acknowledgment for their commitment to an art form that has profoundly shaped the industry.

The rapper and record producer used the opportunity to address the ceremony’s history with hip-hop alongside the subbing of Beyoncé in major categories. Accompanied by his daughter Blue Ivy on stage, and with Beyoncé cheering from the audience, Jay-Z joked at the beginning of his speech that their daughter, who is turning 13 this week, once used his Grammy Awards as sippy cups, but now proudly owns her own collection.

Blue Ivy’s legendary dad went on to say, “Obviously it’s subjective because it’s music and it’s opinion-based. […] I don’t want to embarrass this young lady, but she has more Grammys than everyone and never won Album of the Year” Jay-Z said, referring to his wife, Beyoncé, who in 2023 became the most awarded artist in Grammy history with only one win in major categories. “So even by your own metrics, that doesn’t work. Some of you are gonna go home tonight and feel like you’ve been robbed. Some of you may get robbed. Some of you don’t belong in the category. When I get nervous, I tell the truth.”

Lucky 13 for Swift

What is an awards ceremony without Taylor Swift? We’re not sure, but it would definitely be a bit boring. The cheerleader and biggest fan in the room, Swift is known for dancing to every performance, cheering on friends and colleagues for their wins, and genuinely enjoying herself in a space that can often be stressful. Aside from these candid moments, Swift accomplished two incredible feats at the awards: first, she broke the internet, and then she made absolute history.

Fans had been speculating for quite some time now that Reputation (Taylor’s Version) is on its way, and that the Grammy’s would be the right spot for her to make the announcement. Between a shift in her wardrobe (black hues, snake-inspired touches), visual changes on her website, clues from Taylor Nation’s posts, and even a black-and-white filter change on her Instagram profile, it was enough to drive a Swiftie crazy. But upon winning her 13th Grammy — the star’s lucky number — she used her acceptance speech to announce something nobody imagined: her 11th studio album, THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT, out April 19. Immediately following the announcement, her website crashed – with hour-long online store queues.

But that wasn’t quite the end of Swift’s night. As the event started to come to an end, anticipation for the Album of the Year category grew. An award that she has won three times previously, for Fearless (2010), 1989 (2016), and Folklore (2020), hearing her name called once again for Midnights was an extra special moment for the star, her collaborators, and her fans — for she became the first and only artist to ever win the award four times. But what really had us in tears was her speech, where she clarified that the real reward was being able to do what she loves: “I would love to tell you that this is the best moment of my life, but I feel this happy when I finish a song, or when I crack to code to a bridge I love, or when I’m shortlisting a music video, or when I’m rehearsing with my dancers or my band, or getting ready to go to Tokyo to play a show. For me the award is the work. All I wanna do is keep being able to do this. I love it so much, it makes me so happy.”
