Where does your love for music stem from?
Since I can remember, I’ve always been dancing. Then I went on to learn how to play the piano and the Guzheng, a traditional Chinese instrument. Later, I started singing lessons and eventually got admitted into university as an arts student. I feel like my life has always revolved around music. It was a natural progression for me. However, my true love for electronic music developed mainly due to my passion for learning Logic. It all started when I first heard a song by Fisher, that’s when I fell in love with electronic music.
How has being classically trained helped you to succeed and shape your artistry?
The classical music system has profoundly influenced me, especially since melody is a crucial component of classical music. This background in classical music has been immensely helpful in my later work with electronic music. However, I can’t say that this influence has always been positive because the sensations evoked by classical and electronic music are entirely different. In the beginning, it required a significant shift in my thinking to break away from the classical melodic style.
What made you want to pursue a career as a producer as opposed to within the classic music discipline?
After coming to the US for my studies journey, I encountered many Hip-hop and electronic music producers, and they somewhat influenced me. In the beginning, when I started to experiment with producing electronic music, I was so thrilled. I thought it was fantastic how music could be created in such diverse and creative ways. And you can sample every sound in your music. The process of piecing together different sounds that I liked felt magical to me. Although I had always been learning classical music, it sparked my desire to explore the world of electronic music.
How has your Chinese heritage influenced your sound and approach?
My Chinese heritage plays a crucial role in my musical production. Firstly, it influences my understanding and application of melody and rhythm. The unique melodic lines and rhythmic patterns of traditional Chinese music inspire me to seek innovation and diversity in my creations. For instance, I often incorporate sounds of traditional Chinese instruments, like the Guzheng into my works, adding a deep and novel dimension to my music.
Secondly, my approach to creation is also deeply influenced by Chinese culture. The philosophies and artistic traditions of China teach me to pursue balance and harmony, which is reflected in every detail of my music. I strive to find a harmonious blend between the innovation of modern electronic music and classical elements.
Lastly, my Chinese heritage is not just a stylistic manifestation; it’s a source of personal stories and emotions. Through my music, I tell my story and share my cultural background, making my music not just a combination of sounds but a conveyance of culture and emotions. In summary, my Chinese heritage shapes not only my musical style but also my overall perspective and expression as an artist.
How would you define the Chinese music scene? What’s good about it and what could be better?
The Chinese music scene is diverse and vibrant, blending traditional and modern elements to create unique musical styles. One of the advantages is the rapid development of the Chinese music market, which brings more opportunities and challenges, enabling artists to try new styles and ideas. The influence of traditional Chinese music remains strong, appearing in many modern musical works in new forms, which is crucial for preserving cultural heritage while promoting musical innovation.
However, the Chinese music scene also faces some challenges. For example, the homogenisation of popular music in the market is quite significant, which might limit the development of musical diversity. Especially, the electronic music genre lacks market presence. Overall, the Chinese music scene is continuously progressing and developing, and it has immense potential and space for growth.
How was it for you personally and artistically making the move from China to the US for college?
For me, this was a significant transition in my life. From a personal perspective, it was not just a geographical move but also a huge leap in terms of culture and mindset. I had to adapt to a completely new environment, language, and culture, which was both a challenge and an opportunity for growth. I learned to live independently and communicate with people from all over the world, greatly broadening my horizons. This move had a profound impact on my music creation. Here, I was exposed to a variety of different music styles, especially electronic music and Hip-hop, which I had less exposure to in China. My study and life in the United States not only enriched my personal experiences but also opened new paths and possibilities for my music career.
How would you describe your production style?
My only focused on Techno, but it extends beyond the traditional confines of the genre. My style is characterised by a strong sense of melody. I strive to create a sense of fluidity and depth in the melodies within my work while maintaining the rhythmic drive and energy of Techno music. This combination gives my music both a melodic beauty and the passion and power of Techno. Therefore, you could describe my production style as melodic Techno, finding a unique balance between traditional Techno beats and modern melodic elements.
Talk us through your creative process?
Basically, whenever I have an idea, I’ll jump right into it and work on it until it’s finished. If I’m not in the studio, I’ll write it down immediately to make sure I don’t forget. But often, it all starts with selecting vocal samples, a process that frequently sparks my creativity.
Could you explain the creation and concepts behind your most recent release, “Love Is Special?”
When I stumbled upon that vocal, I instantly fell in love with it. I just knew I had to weave it into my song. The line “Love is special” resonated deeply with me because when you truly care for someone, they become the most special entity in your world, someone you treat in a unique way.
During that period, I was contemplating ways to create something different. This project, I would say, is a result of ongoing exploration. This vocal and its lyrics inspired me to venture into crafting something distinctive, a piece that reflects continuous exploration and effort in my musical journey.
How was the experience releasing on esteemed labels like Drumcode and mau5trap?
For me, Drumcode’s appearance was truly a surprise: when I was creating ‘Freaking Out,’ I was deeply discouraged and spent a long time doubting myself. During moments of breakdown, I’d scream loudly to release the pressure. Suddenly, an inspiration struck, and I decided to incorporate my screams into this track. Ultimately, I never expected it would lead me to my coveted ‘Drumcode’ record label. This release has given me tremendous encouragement and further solidified my determination to pursue my dream in electronic music.
mau5trap has been a true gift: I vividly recall the moment when the head of the label reached out after I released “Dancing in the Desert” Mix set on Youtube and asking for demos. I couldn’t believe it was real!
My first release with mau5trap was “You’re My Ecstasy” featured in “We Are Friends Vol. 11” compilation. Being alongside Deadmau5 in a compilation, you can imagine how thrilled I was. Then came the “Dance” EP, where I took the release very seriously, even work with a visual artist to create an MV. The overall vibe leaned towards a darker vibe. Please stay tuned for what’s next on mau5trap! It’s a whole new breakthrough, and I hope you will enjoy it.
What would you like to achieve in the music industry?
My goal is to create influential works, aspiring to produce widely acclaimed pieces like those of Adam Beyer, Hi-Lo, Layton Giordani, and Eli Brown, and become a top Techno producer and DJ. Additionally, as a Chinese electronic musician, I dream of performing on the world’s top stages, showcasing the charm and strength of Chinese electronic music. Through my efforts and creations, I aim not only to gain recognition in the international music scene but also to inspire more Chinese electronic music artists to pursue their dreams and shine on the global music stage.
What’s coming from you next year?
I have an upcoming single will be released on Mau5trap. It breaks away from my usual arrangements approach, merging elements of tech house and dance. It incorporates a substantial amount of vocals. Stay tuned for this exciting fusion. And I’ve been attempting to incorporate the Chinese Guzheng instrument into Techno, I hope that one day I can share with everyone a piece that I feel represents the perfect fusion of Eastern and Western music.
