Boston-born, LA-based Indi Star is making her way through the crowds as a multi-hyphenated artist, balancing a packed schedule between working on her acting duties, producing music, and creating digital content in the fashion sphere. With a handful of significant TV projects under her belt, including working with Nickelodeon, she’s no stranger to the spotlight. But now, she’s navigating the indie-pop scene, mastering her artistry in the music industry with her newest single, “Hurt A Little.”

The song is an upbeat, intoxicating tune where we see Indi reflect on the painful end of a relationship while seeking vengeance and overflowing with resentment. “’Hurt A Little’ is a poignant song about the pain of one-sided heartbreak, with a raw plea for the other person to feel the same anguish,” she shares. To compliment the track’s sonic experience, “Hurt A Little” comes accompanied by a music video.

Here, we connected with the up-and-coming singer to discuss the single, her musical inspirations, creative upbringing, and what’s next in her musical journey.

Hi Indi! Congratulations on your new music video. Can you tell us a bit about “Hurt A Little” and the story behind it?
Hi! Thank you so much for having me! Yes, I am so excited about my new song and music video for “Hurt A Little”! It’s a song about feeling like, at the end of a relationship, that the other person is not feeling as affected or hurt as you are about the relationship ending. It’s a bit about that feeling of wanting vengeance or at least an evening out of the pain you are feeling.

How did you first get into music, and who were your earliest influences?
I started taking voice and piano lessons around age 6 but I really started taking music seriously at about age 11 when I was selected to join Kidz Bop. I received so much training in voice, dance and performance and it really ignited a love of music for me, so much so that I continued my solo career after leaving! I would have to say that Taylor Swift was probably my biggest and earliest role model in the music industry. I just love her vibe and her ability to tell such great stories in her music.

How do you approach the creative process when writing and producing your music?
All of my music is based off my life experiences and how I handle them and get through them. Every song starts off with a story or an experience and then that experience just gets shaped into a story set to music!

Can you share a pivotal moment in your career that you think helped shape who you are as an artist today?
I honestly would have to say that my time with Kidz Bop was a pivotal moment that really taught me the reality of what it actually takes to take a music career seriously. Even at the age of 11, I would be working 5 or 6 days a week on all aspects of singing, dancing, and performing and it really conditioned me to have a truthful expectation of what I need to do if I wanted to have an actual shot at making it in the music business.

How would you define your artistic essence?
For music I feel I am in the indie pop genre. A lot of my music tends to be airy and emotional lyrics with slower and subdued tracks. My latest track, “Hurt A Little” is a little heavier than my past songs but I really like it and can see myself heading more in that direction.

What sets this new track apart from your previous work? And what excites you most about this new project?
I feel like I am maturing with each new track that I release, and I really like the energy and vibe of “Hurt A Little.” It’s a bit more of a strength in the lyrics and the music as opposed to sad retelling of an experience. I like that strength of persevering through an experience instead of being just being affected by it.

How do you balance your diverse career as an actress, singer, dancer, model…?
Acting definitely sets the schedule because it is so tied to an actual schedule set by production. Singing and fashion and content creating is more dictated by my own time so it’s good because I am always staying busy with something. They all kind of work together also as I can always get content from singing and fashion and then utilize my music and content to get more into the fashion scene. It really kind of balances itself out!

Are there any common threads that connect these different aspects of your life?
Yeah, I mean in my actual personal life, I am pretty shy and introverted, but I love that I can share myself through all these different artistic styles whether it’s acting or music or fashion or content creation! It really is my form of self-expression.

Looking ahead, what are your aspirations and goals as a musician?
I have about 3 new songs I am working on right now and I would really love to work on an EP or an album very soon within the next year!

Finally, what’s next for you in your musical journey, and what are you most looking forward to in the future?
I am working with new music management right now that I am very excited about! I am branching out to some new music producers and song writing teams and just really seeing where it takes me. I’m excited because I really feel like I am entering a new more mature phase of my music where I can really share my stories with a more mature audience!
