JOEL CORRY

We hear from multi-BRIT nominated DJ and producer about the evolution of his style, his favourite collaborations, and his new album.

Multi-BRIT nominated DJ and producer Joel Corry is the artist behind some of the biggest dance records of late. Between working with artists such as RAYE, Charli XCX, and David Guetta, touring globally as a DJ, and consistently pushing himself to refine and perfect his craft, he never seems to slow down.

His debut album, Another Friday Night, is out now, with the hit single “0800 HEAVEN” and features from the likes of Rita Ora, Becky Hill, MNEK, Saweetie, and JHart — in addition to the aforementioned collaborators. Experimental yet cohesive, it reminds the world that Corry has been the magic behind our Friday nights for half a decade.

Ahead of the album release, we had the opportunity of speaking with Corry about the trajectory of his production style, his favourite (and dream) collaborations, and, of course, the new record.

Who and what influences you?
Artists like Calvin Harris, David Guetta & Tiesto have definitely inspired and influenced me. They’ve stayed at the top of the game for a long period of time, delivering loads of hit records and have built huge global DJ brands. Outside of music, successful people in general influence and motivate me. I’m a big fan of Cristiano Ronaldo, Dwayne Johnson and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

How did you first get into production?
I was always DJing right the way through my teenage years. After I finished school, I went to college and undertook a music production course, which is when I first started producing music and learning about how a studio works. It gave me great insight into engineering and recording, and a general overview of the music business.

What initially drew you to dance music?
I was born and raised in North London and my early musical influences were UK Garage and Drum ‘N’ Bass. I started DJing when I was 13 years old, and the UK Garage scene was really influential for me growing up. In 2019, I covered a proper UK Garage classic, “I’m Sorry” by Monsta Boy & Denzie, with my single “Sorry”. My love for House music really kicked off during my first trips to Ibiza. I remember seeing Carl Cox play at Space Ibiza when I was 18 years old, and it totally blew my mind. I’ve been back to Ibiza every year since!

How would you describe your production style?
My production style has changed over the years; from EDM and Melbourne Bounce to Piano House, Tech House and more recently, Trance. I’m probably most recognised for my Piano House sounding records like “Sorry”, “Lonely”, and “Head & Heart” with MNEK. I think it’s important that when people hear one of my records, they know it’s mine and they feel familiar with it, but it’s also important to bring a fresh sound to my music to keep things moving forward.

You’ve collaborated with some huge names – who stands out to you?
I’ve been lucky to collaborate with so many amazing talented artists over the years. One that stands out is MNEK. We achieved incredible things together with “Head & Heart”, and he’s also written on many of my other records. Collaborating with David Guetta was a big moment for me too, as he is one of my idols and now has become a good friend. I also loved working with Tom Grennan, we had so much fun together on the campaign for our single, “Lionheart”.

Who else would you love to collaborate with in the future?
Ed Sheeran. Everyone knows I’m a huge Ed Sheeran fan. I hung out with him after the MTV EMAS a few years ago and got to know him a bit more. He told me he was a big fan of my records, which I couldn’t believe. I also remixed his smash hit “Bad Habits”. Who knows, maybe one day we’ll get in the studio together!

I also had dinner with Tiesto in Las Vegas recently. It was amazing to hear his story. I could relate to his passion and love for DJing. His journey to the top of the game is so inspiring. He’s an awesome guy and I hope we can collaborate soon.

What’s your favourite venue to spin at?
My top three venues to play at have been The Brooklyn Mirage in New York, Ushuaia in Ibiza, and Printworks in London. Festivals wise, I’m gonna say Creamfields, EDC Las Vegas and Tomorrowland. I always dreamed of playing at these sort of places and I am proud that I’ve achieved it!

We loved “Drinkin”. Talk us through the track and collaborating with MK and Rita?
Drinkin’ samples Chance the Rapper & Knox Fortune’s “All Night”. I started work on the idea in July 2022 and I made a demo that I believed had good potential. I’d always wanted to collaborate with MK, and this felt like the right track to do together. MK loved the idea and added his magic to the track. I then reached out to Rita Ora because I knew the track would be a great fit for her vocals and the energy she brings to records. Rita and I had met a few years before and exchanged numbers, we wanted to work together, and the timing was perfect for “Drinkin”. After many months of trying, we finally cleared the sample and officially released the track in August.

Congratulations on your forthcoming debut album! What was the process behind creating that?
I’m so buzzing to release my debut album. I wanted to present all my records in one body of work, like the ultimate Joel Corry banger playlist! It’s got all my hits from over the years like “Head & Heart” with MNEK, “BED” with RAYE & David Guetta and “OUT OUT” with Jax Jones, Charli XCX & Saweetie, as well as my new material like ‘’0800 HEAVEN” with Nathan Dawe & Ella Henderson, “Drinkin” and my new single, “Hey DJ”. It’s been years in the making!

What can listeners expect from the record?
Listeners can expect to hear all their favourite records of mine, plus some of my new material and a few surprises along the way. The album feels nostalgic with early records like “Sorry” and “Lonely”, but fresh with tracks like “0800 HEAVEN” and “Hey DJ”, too. I’m super proud of the album and hope everyone loves it!

Outside of music, talk us through your interests and career pursuits?
My other passion in life is fitness. Growing up, I was either practicing mixing on my decks or down the gym lifting weights. In the past, I’ve taken my fitness very seriously and competed in bodybuilding competitions around the country. I’m very focused on my DJing and music right now, but I do have ambitions to pursue more fitness related goals again in the future.

What are your biggest career goals?
I have achieved a lot of goals already in my life. I never would have believed that I would have had a number one single, multi-platinum records and an album out! DJing is my passion and I’ve toured the world doing the thing I love most. My goal now is to see how far I can take this magical journey, as well as looking after my family and enjoying life to the max!
