J Hus – Beautiful and Brutal Yard

Today marks the return of one of the UK’s most prominent and notorious players, J Hus. His two previous records have set impeccably high standards, and after a three year wait for his return and the success of the teaser singles, there’s been few LPs that have amassed as much hype as Beautiful and Brutal Yard. So, does it deliver? The short answer is yes, on the most part. Whilst a tad overlong and a little too crude for our liking, Hus showers the tape with charisma and craft, unstoppable when at his best. Featuring some of the most culturally and musically significant acts across the globe – from Drake to Burna Boy, Jorja Smith to Popcaan – it’s apparent that Hus’ reach continues to elongate, his influence scattering across the universal music hemisphere, setting new limits of the UK rap genre.

Billie Eilish — “What Was I Made For?”

Billie, we’re obsessed. Her new song and music video for the Barbie soundtrack is out now — and it’s the ultimate Barbie x Billie crossover. Delving into the purpose and meaning of life, “What Was I Made For?” adds a self-reflective, emotional touch to the otherwise glittery soundtrack — bringing in a more serious and sombre tone to the character of Barbie. In the accompanying music video, which was directed by Billie herself, we see her dressed up as a classic Barbie doll with a blonde ponytail and pastel heels, sitting at a desk in the middle of an empty space. Opening up a vintage Barbie box, she begins to go through doll clothes, meticulously organising them on hangers. One of the coolest details? If you take a closer look, you’ll see each outfit is a miniature version of one of her own past looks. Genius.

The Streets – “Troubled Waters”

Mr Skinner is back! Everyone’s favourite geezer hasn’t released a solo album under The Streets alias since 2011’s Computers and Blues, and it’s with much welcomed surprise that we have been once again blessed with the undeniable individuality of Mike. “Troubled Waters” combines cinematic sonics with minimalism, for a track that is as immersive and visceral as the very best of Skinner’s work. With an album on the way later this year, prepare to be launched back in the imperfect perfection of The Streets.
