French producer Thylacine has partnered with a 74-piece symphony to reimagine his classic track “Poly”. Originally released as part of his debut album, Transsiberian, the song was first composed on the Trans-Siberian Railway, based on a recording on Bulgarian polyphony. With limited resources and equipment, Thylacine kept the track simple, using a small keyboard to create synthetic orchestral references on his own. Now, his vision of bringing the sound to life with a real symphony orchestra has come to fruition.
“I’ve already had the opportunity to perform several different versions of it during my concerts,” he explains. “But I’ve always wanted to properly record the string parts with a real orchestra. When the project of doing a concert with a symphony orchestra emerged, it went straight to the top of the list of pieces to reinterpret.”
Out now with a video directed by Cécile Chabert, “Poly (and 74 Musicians)” shows the beloved song with a heightened cinematic flair. Blending electronic, ambient, and classical elements, it features intricate string arrangements and an unparalleled emotion. “For the video that accompanies it,” adds Thylacine. “I wanted to keep the idea of the journey, very present in the Transsiberian album, in its simplest version. Cécile Chabert, who directed the video, wrote a journey that moves between the different protagonists of her symphonic interpretation according to each moment of the track, and the result is a combination of just two similar sequence shots, filmed during the general rehearsal and the live show.’’
With “Poly (and 74 Musicians)”, Thylacine continues with his mission to invite listeners to discover his musical world through travel. And, trust us, listening is truly an engaging journey.
