NEW NOISE: BARBARA FALZONI

The powerfully honest singer-songwriter tells us about her debut single, and how it sets the stage for her upcoming EP.

London-based Spanish-Italian singer-songwriter Barbara Falzoni has been writing since the early age of 11. Born in Switzerland and raised in Marbella, Spain, her love for the lyrical landscape began through poetry — utilising words as a means to express herself and heal. Once she began singing, however, the world truly became her oyster. With vocal lessons, early recording experiences in her teacher’s home studio, and later academic studies in music business and musical theatre, she began expanding on her natural talent and developing her star quality. After moving to London to further her studies in music production, music composition, and music performance, she solidified her unique soundscape and niche in the industry.

With her debut single, “Fighting Shadows”, she truly starts off with a bang. Vulnerable and powerful, the ballad was written about her own personal experiences finding the light after hardship, and has that same level of rawness and honesty as one can imagine her early days of writing poems held. Letting us into her soul and her world, Barbara ignites emotion within us all and makes us increasingly excited for her upcoming debut EP, “RAW”.

We had the honour of speaking with Barbara about her musical influences, “Fighting Shadows”, and what we can expect from “RAW”.

Now for the interview…

Hi Barbara! How are you doing?
Hello! I’m very well, Thank you for having me.

How did your early love of poetry evolve into a singing/songwriting career?
It happened naturally. I have always loved music and by the age of 14, I started taking vocal technique lessons. At the beginning I was more focused on my singing career but down the line I realised I could merge my passion for writing with singing.

Who were your early musical inspirations?
Adele, Amy Winehouse and Justin Bieber have always been my biggest inspirations. Nevertheless, since I was a child I have been listening to all kinds of music genres. Each of them has something unique, which is fascinating, and encouraged me to experiment and create my own style.

Do you have a typical writing process?
I like to write alone and most of the time during the night. I usually work on the melody and lyrics simultaneously. When I feel the most creative is when I’m not feeling well or when I have something to say; I dig deep inside my soul and stir my emotions to create.

How did your musicality change when you moved from Madrid to London?
Even though Spanish is my mother tongue, I have always sang and written songs in English. After studying music for a year in Madrid I realised moving abroad was essential to develop my artistic vision.

Moving to London set free my creativity and helped me find my sound. Studying Music in depth made me improve and led me to start writing more songs. I learned a lot working with other producers, writers and musicians which also helped me build up my confidence.

Living by myself in a new country was challenging and lonely which made me focus and rely even more on my music; London made me not only a stronger person but the artist I am today.

What are the differences between the two music industries?
Besides the language being Spanish, my beloved Spain has so much music diversity. Spaniards love music and they live their lives with music being a big part of it!

Now, my beloved UK, I truly believe it has always been a step ahead of everybody in songwriting and music production. I have learned so much from great producers like Trevor Horn, and of course the Beatles, but there’s so many amazing British artists that without knowing have been big mentors of mine.

We love “Fighting Shadows”! What inspired this song and what themes are present?
I’m happy to hear that, thank you! I wrote “Fighting Shadows” about the end of a long term relationship. My heart was broken and writing this song helped me heal and close a chapter of my life.

Not only in love, but in life, we might find ourselves stuck in a dark place. Feeling overwhelmed often leads us to perceiving our life or certain situations as a big mountain impossible to climb. “Fighting Shadows” represents that moment when you overcome the darkness. You decide to break through and transform everything that held you back into fuel to live the life you truly deserve and become the best version of yourself.

How does the music video bring this idea to a visual dimension?
The indoor footage symbolises that darkness I mentioned above; feeling lost, lonely, broken inside. Running outside of the Abbey towards the light is that moment when you breakthrough and the cliff footage symbolises self empowerment, a new beginning in life.

How did you decide to release this single first?
Creating this single has been incredibly challenging. I worked on it for years and even when things didn’t turn out the way I expected them to, I did not stop until I felt proud of it. I always knew it would be my first single; “Fighting Shadows” not only showcases a very important time of my life but it also represents the unconditional love I have for music.

What can you tell us about your upcoming EP, “RAW”? What does it explore thematically and sonically?
It’s a very personal and vulnerable project. I share some of my deepest emotions, thoughts and life experiences. It features 6 tracks; Each of them with a different instrumentation highlighting the meaning behind each song. The listener will be immersed in my inner universe.

My music producer, El Maestro Rudy Perez, produced my EP “RAW” in a way I could have only dreamed of. I could not miss the opportunity to express how thankful I am to him and his amazing team for making it sound the way it does.

What are you most looking forward to in regards to its release?
I’m looking forward to sharing what I have been working on for so long. It is scary but exciting at the same time. And of course, I can’t wait to start performing it live!
