PREMIERE: JOHN DUFF — “HOUSE ON FIRE”

The LA-based artist’s new single offers an infectious, groovy beat — as well as a thought-provoking commentary on society, social media, and relationships.

After growing up in a suburb outside of Baltimore, graduating from Syracuse University, and working as an actor in New York City for six years, John Duff moved to Hollywood. It was here, now many years ago, that he truly began developing his own artistry and sound — all of which can be seen in his newest single, “House on Fire”, out now.

“House on Fire” tells the story of one of Duff’s own dates. Themes of infatuation, wistfulness, and fantasy weave throughout the compelling lyrics — which were written using actual conversations he had on the date, as well as DMs. “I wrote the song about somebody I went on one date with,” John Duff explains. “Unbeknownst to them, they lived in my mind as ‘the one’.” It was a completely delusional fantasy, Duff admits, but it got him to thinking: how close are the lines between innocent adoration and sadistic obsession?”

Sonically, the track is nostalgic and groovy, with innovative alt-pop production and strong, infectious vocals. Bringing this soundscape into a visual dimension, John has released a music video for “House on Fire”, directed by Xavier Hamel. Exploring the dark side of the track through a dystopian depiction of reality, the video tells the story of a wannabe-TikTok-star’s duality. While one side of himself shines on camera, the darker version lingers out of the public eye. A commentary on society, social media, and relationships, “House on Fire” is as thought-provoking as it is a jam.
