22-year-old Thavoron is back with a new project, and it’s as meaningful as ever. Based in Seattle, Washington, the Cambodian-American artist shares his second album along with a short film, blending indie rock and acoustic folk to touch on themes of queer relationships, childhood, and cultural assimilation. Titled Tommy Loves You, the album and correlating short film offer a fresh perspective as the artist touches souls with his breathtaking voice and lyrical mastery. Angelic, heartbreaking, and intimate, the project ebbs and flows through the emotions of traumatic relationships, falling in love too fast, longing for validation, and learning to love oneself.

The title Tommy Loves You is a reference to Thavoron’s middle name, which he went by as a child in a manner of assimilating into American culture. Representing both his youth and how far he has come in accepting and loving his identity, it is further explored in the short film. Directed by Maddie Ludgate, the video visually represents feeling stuck in a cycle, with only one way out: choosing yourself first.

“There have been so many stages in my life and things I’ve had to learn, and I feel like I wouldn’t have been able to do so without the love of my inner child ‘Tommy’ — knowing that he’s always rooting me on to chase after my wildest dreams,” says Thavoron.

Creating a sense of community with his fanbase, Thavoron strives to pave the way for Southeast/Asian American and queer artists. All while grasping hearts.
