PREMIERE: HOPE — “CAN’T BOX ME”

The East London creative breaks boundaries with his new single, an introspective and optimistic offering exploring his career as both an actor and musician.

Multidisciplinary actor and musician Hope grew up in the arts. Born and raised in East London, with Jamaican/Antiguan and Nigerian parents who exposed him to an extensive array of music and film genres, he became a natural storyteller from a young age. Crossing industries and mediums, from his role as Aaron in Top Boy to his debut 2022 singles, he defies boundaries and carves a space for his dichotomy of work. His new single, “Can’t Box Me”, speaks to this very thing.

Mixing rap and R&B, with nods to afrobeat and pop, “Can’t Box Me” is an introspective track with a personal yet universal message. Hope discusses creativity in an example of its genius, with smooth vocals and melodies set to stripped-back percussion. A beautiful depiction of optimism in lyrics and sonics, it embodies the life and humanity of imagination and artistry. “’Can’t Box Me’ explores the frustration of being ‘boxed’ into one medium and not taken seriously when branching out,” Hope explains. “Artistry can be expressed in multiple ways. For me I’m an actor who branched into music who can still be successful in both.”

“Can’t Box Me” is out now with an enchanting music video directed by Rasaq Kukoyi, shot in Seaford.
