PREMIERE: TIM ATLAS — “KNOCKIN”

The newly Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter and producer debuts a fresh chapter of his artistry with this industrial, grungy masterpiece.

Tim Atlas has released the first track off his upcoming EP, Le Soir, described by the artist himself as “Pharrell meets Gorillaz meets Tame Impala”. Entitled “Knockin”, it marks a new chapter for Atlas, as he moves both literally and figuratively from the West Coast’s sunshine indie pop to Brooklyn’s liberating, grungy sound. Experimental and liberating, the new track is groovy with a sharp edge. Lyrically, “Knockin” details the magnetism that builds between people romantically — and all that comes with it: the excitement of a new connection, the distraction of passion, and the cruel realisation that the escape is only temporary. The dreamy funk sonics bring the words to life, creating a comprehensive, multi-dimensional story.

Le Soir, translating to “at night”, is the first of three instalments that Tim will be releasing. “I tend to associate the night with feeling disoriented the longer I’m awake”, he states. “I think a lot of songwriters will work well into the early morning, and the results end up unlocking creative tendencies in the process. Sometimes feeling uncomfortable can be a great thing”.

With an accompanying music video, “Knockin” is trippy, polarising, and wonderfully intoxicating. The visuals jump around and feel purposefully discombobulated, with confusing angles and fresh typefaces. Thought-provoking and addicting, it’s hard to look away.
