Kieran Poling, better known as Kacia, has released his relatable debut single, “Young Fun Dumb” along with a music video. In an unexpected, experimental combination of alt-pop and garage, the artist tells a coming-of-age story that listeners can effortlessly connect to. Steady, emotional piano notes bring a sense of nostalgia and comfort to the sonics, perfectly tying Kacia’s soothing voice with the track’s synth beats. Through meaningful lyrics and playful production, Kacia evokes feelings of longing as he touches on themes of self-discovery, new experiences, and teenage romance.

Speaking on the song, Kacia explains it was one of the most challenging songs he wrote with co-writer and producer Matt Fisher. “Initially I started sketching this song at 17. It gives an innocent reflection back to my teenage years, the soundtrack to my adventures, self-discovery, and ultimately my first proper relationship experience… Out of all the songs we’ve written this is the song I don’t think I could write now, it belongs to a moment in time.”

The visual component exemplifies these themes and the song’s soundtrack quality through a nostalgic portrayal of prom. Although it stands on its own, Kacia’s goal is to create one long movie through every video he releases from his upcoming debut album, What if Life is Just a Movie. A bit like a mini-series’ episodes or a book’s chapters, each piece will fit into a whole story. The first installment, “Young Fun Dumb”, sees the early stages of a young love, interspersed with home video-style shots of teenage emotions, ambivalence, and embarrassing teachers. As he walks through the crowd and steps on the stage, he’s not only presenting himself to the prom-goers, but to the global audience bound to connect with “Young Fun Dumb” and its video.
