NEW NOISE: HENRY CHAUHAN

We talk to the rising artist about the power of vulnerability, the story behind his artwork, and what the future holds.

Writing from the heart is something that comes naturally to music prodigy Henry Chauhan. A talented singer-songwriter and musician, the up-and-coming star is surprising many with his emotionally-mature lyrics and introspective ballads. Showcasing that his musicianship skills are way ahead of his years, it’s fair to say Henry is standing on his own two feet as a force to be reckoned with in the alternative scene.

Landing as the rock industries latest fix, the artist is currently in the process of transforming his sound from nu-metal into a new and evolved concoction of EDM meets metalcore with hints of orchestral textures. Forging a genre-fluid soundscape heavily inspired by his current real-life experiences and goated musicians such as Linkin Park and Architects, the musician is developing a sound through an angsty teenage lens that further explores his youthful charisma.

His new single “Meant To Be” touches upon the emotionally raw subject of feeling under-appreciated and is heightened with a mean guitar riff. Throughout his work, the artist dives deep to bring the best of his talents to life. A true creative vision with an acute eye for detail, we caught up with Henry about being honest in his music, the story behind his avant-garde artwork and what the future holds.

Hey Henry! How are you today?
I’m good thank you.

When did you start creating music and when did you know you wanted to pursue it as a career?
I started playing drums at the age of five, practising everyday I quickly progressed to writing my my own music – it felt instinctive. I knew very early on that I wanted a career in music.

What music are you currently listening to and who inspires you artistically?
At the moment I’m listening to Sleep Token and Bad Omens, I’m also loving the latest album from Malevolence which I listen to on my way to school. I’m constantly inspired by other artists but currently it’s Linkin Park, While She Sleeps and Architects.

How would you define your sound?
My sound initially began as nu-metal and then I built on this by incorporating elements of EDM, metalcore, orchestral music and ambiences.

Can you tell me about your new track “Meant To Be”? How did it come about and what do you hope to
convey through it?
“Meant To Be” is a very personal track, it’s about feeling invisible, feeling ignored. Not being recognised for hard work but trying to keep faith in it being meant to be. It incorporates rap and heavy elements whilst still having softer sounds too. It came about a few months ago when I suddenly had the idea for the main riff of the song whilst in a lesson at school, I then came home and developed it into what the song is today.

You touch on some deeply important topics in the track. To you, what is the reward of being so vulnerable and honest with your music?
I try not to overthink about what I write about. I write my truth and what affects me in that moment. Every song illustrates what I was thinking at the time I wrote it. Being honest in my music I hope that people can feel a connection to my music and relate to it, as that is what music is about, sharing experiences in life through sounds.

What is the story behind the faces on the artwork for your singles? What do they represent?
The faces on the artwork are an analogy. The faces represent us and the pressure of everyday lives and negativity and how we almost bare cracks and scars of negative things that happen but despite all this still put on a normal face and carry on with our day to day lives.

How do you balance your music career with the general life of a teenager?
I am very busy all the time! I do my homework first and then do music. Everyday I do music whether it be writing a new songs or playing drums – after all it’s my passion and it’s what I love to do.

As a young artist, you truly are the industry’s future. What do you hope to see with alt metal, or the music industry as a whole, in years to come?
I would love to see the alt-metal genre develop and grow to a wider audience and as for the music industry, it would be awesome to see more live performance opportunities for young musicians.

Is there anything you’re particularly looking forward to in your career?
I can’t wait to just get out there and start performing on stage, meeting new people and other like minded musicians. The music industry feels very exciting, you don’t know what will come next.
