For the month of May, STUDIO WEST gallery is exhibiting a series of photographs of artists by South London-based photographer Brynley Odu Davies. The exhibit, Artist Portraits, marks Davies’ first solo exhibit. For the past three years, Davis has travelled around the UK to photograph over 200 contemporary artists in their studios, capturing their creativity in a moment of great uncertainty. Many of the images were taken during the COVID-19 pandemic and bring to life the great resilience of artists amongst financial and emotional hardships. Despite budget cuts to art funding and rising housing costs, artists continue to push forward and create meaningful work with a global impact. The photography series will be exhibited for the first time, showing its viewers the powerful influence of art and the people at the forefront of its future. Davis highlights the importance of supporting emerging UK artists, using his artistic talent to showcase theirs — a perfect fit for Studio West. Addressing the gender, racial, and socio-economic inequalities of the art industry, the space is committed to bringing underrepresented artists to the forefront of the scene.

Brynley Odu Davis’ Artist Portraits will be exhibited at STUDIO WEST from 5 – 31 May.
