GUCCI BEAUTY

We sit down with Gucci’s Global Makeup Artist Thomas de Kluyver to talk all things Éternité de Beauté – the brand’s new luminously lightweight, matte foundation.

If you’re a fan of makeup that lasts all day, you’ll want to hear about Gucci Beauty’s latest release. Éternité de Beauté is a 24-hour, no-transfer foundation that delivers full coverage with just one drop. And it’s not just long-lasting – this foundation has a luminous and comfortable matte finish that feels lightweight on the skin.

The formula is powered by high-skin affinity powders and coated pigments with a proprietary polymer technology, making it transfer-proof and able to stay fresh all day. Plus, it’s infused with Hyaluronic Acid and Black Rose Oil for added hydration and comfort. But that’s not all – Éternité de Beauté debuts in 40 shades covering a range of four undertones, and its sleek bottle is topped with an ivory cap and embossed with a gold-toned Gucci logo. Adding to the canon of the Gucci Beauty matte face routine, the Éternité de Beauté goes hand in hand with products like the Sérum de Beauté Fluide Matifiant and Sérum de Beauté Fluide Soyeux.

Behind this release is Gucci’s Global Makeup Artist Thomas de Kluyver, whose expertise and creativity has brought a unique perspective to the world of beauty. His work with Gucci has seen the talent dream up some of the House’s most iconic looks. Luckily for us, we had the opportunity to sit down with de Kluyver and pick his brains. From what sets the Éternité de Beauté apart from the rest, and its universality, to the playful campaign lensed by Thurstan Redding – we touched all the bases.

What are the main features of the new Gucci Éternité de Beauté foundation?
I think what’s so incredible about this product is that it’s a full coverage foundation, but at the same time it’s super breathable, and also quite lightweight. It has a beautiful, luminous magic.

How does it improve upon, or differ to other foundations on the market?
There are so many like full coverage foundations, they’re quite heavy and quite cakey. For me personally, I have quite dry skin, I’m in my late 30s. If I ever would use a full coverage product, it would be just too heavy on me. But when I first started working on the product, we made sure to have a balance between coverage and feel. Using super modern technologies, we were able to create quite a revolutionary product in the foundation market.

Could you explain more about how the Éternité de Beauté carries the thread of Gucci’s “eclectic narrative and creative vision”?
I think what’s so special about Gucci Beauty is using makeup as a form of identity and self-expression, and really encouraging people to be playful. To see makeup as more of a fashion accessory rather than some sort of preconceived idea of what society expects of us to wear. The Éternité de Beauté continues along that story. A lot of the Gucci Beauty products are multi-purpose. For example, lipsticks can be used on the eyes, cheeks and lips. We want people to be as expressive as possible. With the Éternité de Beauté you can build it up layer by layer, but you can also use it as a foundation, and a concealer. It allows you to be whoever you want with it.

What kind of people do you envision wearing this foundation?
Everyone can wear it, which makes it incredible! Also, the shade range is super diverse. We have 40 shades, which go into five different colour categories: fair, medium fair, medium, medium deep, deep. We also have four undertones, which are warm, cool, neutral, and an olive undertone. When we were working on this product, what I really wanted to do was create something that was for everyone, and also a product that we could use everywhere. Whether you’re backstage, on the red carpet, or going about your day-to-day – the Éternité de Beauté fits into every situation.

Could you explain more about how the Éternité de Beauté fits into Gucci’s matte face routine?
At Gucci we’ve got two different primers: one which is a hydrating primer and one that’s a matte primer. When we’re talking more about the matte fade through routine it’s about using the matte primer which creates a really beautiful seamless layer on your skin, which allows the foundation to glide on a lot more smoothly. And even though it does have 24 hours wear, it does help to set that layer as well.

How important is it for you to include a diverse range of shades?
That was the most important thing when we were creating the shades. We made sure that we got the shades right, so we tested these shades over and over again. I had them all with me like when we were backstage at shows, so I was able to test them on real skin – and tweak them accordingly.

The Éternité de Beauté also features a range of undertones too. Could you explain more about that?
We touched on that a bit before, but we basically have cool undertones which are on the pinkier side. Then we have more neutral overtones, as well as warmer tones which are more yellow-meets-gold. Then we have olive undertones, and this range allows everyone to choose what best fits them.

With ingredients like black rose oil and hyaluronic acid. What properties do these ingredients bring to the foundation?
These natural ingredients help with hydrating the skin and holding in moisture.

Let’s talk about the campaign. It’s super fun, and an ode to girl bands. What do you think about it?
It was one of those days at work that was just a lot of fun. We were in this studio on the outskirts of Paris and like everyone was dancing around all day. The campaign really captures the energy of what Gucci and Gucci Beauty is. It reflects our essence. Like, you can’t help but walk into a Gucci store and see this positive and joyous energy. The campaign is also a great way of showing you how transfer proof and longwearing this product is.

Lightweight, yet full coverage — we’d love if you could explain how the Éternité de Beauté reimagines matte foundations.
The texture of it is this kind of luminous matte finish, and I think with matte foundations that are currently on the market at the moment, a lot of them are quite dry, and quite cakey so even though they do wear for a very long period of time, they’re not breathable. Ours is lightweight and natural looking, so this is really one of the most revolutionary products in the foundation game.
