PREMIERE: AIZA — “COCOA BUTTER”

The Toronto-based afropop artist releases her first single of the year and you’ll find yourself turning the volume all the way up.

Born in Montreal, afropop artist Aiza found her love for performing via musical theatre. This developed into a career in both music and acting, as she started writing and singing with bands and landing roles in Netflix shows. In 2019, she earned a spot in the prestigious Allan Slaight JUNO Master Class artist development program and moved to Toronto.

Her first song of 2023, “Cocoa Butter” was written during a 2020 lockdown, which occurred soon after her move to Toronto. It tells the story of desire and craving something larger than life, capturing the extroverted pop artist’s longing for excitement and adventure. During lonely and difficult times, Aiza coped by blasting music, dancing by herself, and ultimately creating this song. Enticing, sexy, commanding, and confident, “Cocoa Butter” combines afro-pop with R&B. The production is intricate, layering both distorted and natural vocals to create an out-of-body experience.

“I was out of control but it felt good, almost necessary, to let myself go there. This song will forever be a reminder that I am so much more than the work I do – I deserve to have a good time no matter the state of the world, and this beautiful dark skin I’m in needs to be celebrated,” explains Aiza.

The perfect song for getting ready with your girls, driving with the top down, and dancing in front of the mirror, “Cocoa Butter” is a confident, sexy anthem that will have you pressing replay.
