Ti West’s horror trilogy has had us hooked since its first film, X, was released in Spring 2022. Luckily, it was almost immediately followed by the news of its prequel, Pearl, which was subsequently debuted during the 2022 Toronto Film Festival. Following the screening, West surprised the world with a teaser trailer for the third and final film, MaXXXine. Shot as if a home video, the trailer was short and vague, panning to the Hollywood sign in which ‘Hollywood’ was replaced by ‘MaXXXine.’ Set as a sequel to X, MaXXXine will be set six years after the original movie and follow Mia Goth’s character Maxine on her quest to make it as an actress in 1980s Los Angeles. Other than this, there has been limited information on the casting, release date, or plotline.
MaXXXine’s cast is finally revealed, and it’s even better than we could have ever dreamed. Joining lead (and Wonderland cover star) Mia Goth in the A24 horror film is The Crown’s Elizabeth Debicki, Emily in Paris’ Lily Collins, and Breaking Bad’s Giancarlo Esposito — to name a few. In a video flashing names of the cast, Kevin Bacon, Halsey (yes, the popstar), Moses Sumney, Michelle Monaghan, and Bobby Cannavale are also credited.
For our Autumn/Fall cover, Mia spoke to Ti West about how much this trilogy has meant to her and how she has evolved from one film to the next. “I think filming X led me up to Pearl. I just felt a little less confident on the set of X,” she explained. “You said, ‘Look, Mia, just go with it. If it’s a bad take, it’s a bad take. It’s not the end of the world, just relax and have fun with it!’ I really heard that, and I took that on board. It was at the front of my mind walking onto the Pearl set. And you were right, it worked and I just felt more free.”
We can’t wait to see where Mia goes with MaXXXine, and as filming begins this month, we’ll hopefully get more clues soon.
