PREMIERE: JERUB – “SCARED TO BE MYSELF”

The Nottingham-based singer-songwriter unveils his latest arena-ready single.

Poignancy and self-reflection are rife in the artistic world of JERUB. Picking up sensibilities from genres like pop, soul and indie, the Nottingham-based musician has been swiftly gaining audience hype and critical acclaim for his sound that is catchy, provoking and anthemic, stirring in its message and approach. Born in Nigeria then moving to Nottingham at 10 years old, JERUB found himself immersed in the world of gospel, before discovering the Western pop music hemisphere in his teenager years. He has been working towards his forthcoming EP Finding My Feet, which looks set to be a pinnacle moment for the artist, and has now shared the latest teaser from it.

“Scared to be Myself” is an epitomisation of the soul, heart and nuance of JERUB’s sound. A pure writer, on the new cut the singer looks deep within his psyche, drawing on experiences of lacking self confidence and feeling uncertain, spinning it on its head to devise an underlying message of boldness and belief. Atop the smooth and colourful instrumental palette that uses groove-laden drums and silky guitars, JERUB delivers a diverse performance and an impressively rousing hook that is sure to be sung back to him at festivals this summer.

Speaking on the cut, JERUB comments, “Scared to be Myself is about finding the courage to share the real version of yourself with the world and with people around you. Sometimes I feel the pressure to sound and be a certain way as an artist because everyone has opinions and I’m afraid of what people may think. After a while we forget who we really are because we are doing so much for everyone else. This song is about realising that I’m human and it’s normal to feel like this, everyone goes through it. I hope that people can listen to this and realise that they’re not alone.”

With a burgeoning and commercial sound and the talent to match, we expect big things from JERUB this year and look forward to the upcoming EP!
