PREMIERE: DREW DAVIES – “CODENAME: SOFTBOI”

The rising artist unveils a tongue-in-cheek track that takes out his frustration with the modern dating landscape.

Who isn’t fed up with the way dating is set up these days? It’s impersonal, people feel disposable – and need we go on? Artist Drew Davies shines a light on this struggle with the track “Codename: Softboi.” This single simmers with dark irreverence and a brooding angst that will leave you wanting more. Drawing inspiration from the likes of Alex Cameron and The Horrors, as well as retro soundscapes from artists like TVAM, Davies creates a truly unique sound that is instantly captivating.

In “Codename: Softboi,” Davies takes aim at the 21st Century’s digital Don Juan’s, those who use manipulative tactics to seduce their online love interests. With his tongue firmly planted in cheek, he implores listeners to “put the gaslight out” and reject this toxic behavior. Speaking about the track, Davies says: “Softboi is a satirical examination of the alternative veil men may choose to don in a bid to seduce the object of their desires online. Only to reveal their true lascivious desires when they can wait no longer to capture the ‘prize’.”

But don’t think this single is all anger and no heart. Davies infuses his work with a heavy tenderness that will leave you feeling both invigorated and hopeful. His lo-fi beats, dusty funk licks, and Roland Juno combine to create something intimate yet expansive. With such a stellar release, we can’t wait to hear what Davies cooks up next.
