The Pennsylvania-based musician Liz Lehman (a.k.a The Scary Jokes) taunts us with the first track of their highly anticipated LP Retinal Bloom, “Our Murderous Descent”. Lively and hypnotic, the awe-inspiring track sees the artist’s iconic synth-pop sound collide with drum beats and is underscored by a unique waterfall-inspired essence. In crafting this personal yet highly political anthem, the star drew upon the image of the waterfall to symbolise the LGBTQ community living in a hostile environment and forming a community to combat oppression.

In cultivating the mesmeric music video, Liz employed the help of notable director Dolphin Uppercut. A flurry of enthralling colours and eclectic images, the video is a sight to behold and reflecting on the visual, the star comments: “The actual filming of the music video was similarly very cool and kind of surreal. The video was directed by Dolphin Uppercut, who is an awesome visual artist and musician. He filmed everything with a handheld camcorder, and he was filming me on rollerblades. When I’ve performed in the past I kind of space out, I like to try to forget that there are people watching me. But here, I had this singular, extremely engaged person to play off of, and he was really great to do that with. It felt more like fun than work and it was so intimate that I ended up tapping into a lot of the silly physical & expressive things I do with my friends”.

We can always count on The Scary Jokes to make important topics sound beautiful and nothing is closer to the truth in the new single. Rest underneath a musically melodic waterfall with The Scary Jokes’ “Our Murderous Descent”.
