PREMIERE: JACK VALLIER – “INSOMNIA”

The singer-songwriter makes his awaited return with a rousing effort.

Since storming into our attention back in 2017 with his rich, engrossing and heartfelt EP, Rebekah, Vallier has been established as a key player in the UK’s singer-songwriter scene. ’20 saw his equally impressive sophomore EP Changes serenade our ears, but that was followed by a hiatus. Now, Vallier has returned with fresh single “Insomnia”, more potent and poignant than ever, poised to envelop him in his consciousness, and to soar further into the realms of success.

Backed by bittersweet plucked acoustic guitar, Jack welcomes us into a world of vulnerability, regret and melancholia. The enchanting vocals and airy folk-pop production reel its listener into the song – sweetly sombre. The chorus, primed to be chanted back in venues of all shapes and sizes, is anthemic and heart-rendering, with stirring strings enticing the listener deeper into Jack’s deepest feeling. Lyrically, Jack pens a tale of heartache, distraught at the loss of a lover, flaunting his acumen for sharply emotive narratives. The track is accompanied by a poetically shot visual that sees Vallier in a series of distressing scenarios, missing his former beau.

Speaking on the single, Vallier commented, “I wrote Insomnia in Sweden during a really bad stint of not sleeping, I went into the studio with my favourite producer Freddy Häggstam without sleeping for 48 hours+ so naturally it was the best thing to write about on the day, Freddy really captured the emotion of the song in the production and I feel like it optimises why I started to write songs, to write like therapy for things I struggle with. The insomnia video is a depiction of what it’s like to struggle to sleep every night, the endless thoughts and day dreams you have when you lie there for hours and hours in bed. it shows the late night processing of a breakup, thinking back to the good and bad memories, as well as my own thoughts about myself, finally ending with acceptance that she is gone, which allows me some peace while I drift off to sleep. Myself and director Oska Zaky came up with the ideas together and a team of our friends did an amazing job bringing it to life and showing it in the exact way I wanted.”

A statement return, Vallier has picked up where he left off, we expect him to continue to do so!
